I am trying to help my folks with their medical and financial needs. They are retired in their mid 70's and currently have been enrolled in a medicare supplement plan through my dads company. Their premium is around $400.00 a month, and includes a $1500.00 deductible along with the Part D prescription drug plan. Between the 2 of them they take about 18 different prescription drugs a month. And at least 4 of these are expensive ones. I have learned alot in this past year of helping them, but it's annual enrollment time again, and I'm trying to figure out if their is a better supplemental plan outside of the one through his company. And isn't it better to find one without the annual deductibles? His out of pocket every year is crazy!

Seems to me that at this point in life that most stuff other than copays should be covered. And outside of the plan offered by his company are they going to have to go through the preexisting B...S...to even qualify?

It's all so complicated and of course everchanging....any good advise on my next move? Don't know whether to stick with what he's got or do alot of shopping around in order to possibly save him a good deal of money???

Dazed and confused...

" It sounds like your folks are on a "Medicare Advantage" plan. Advantage plans are plans where patients get all their medicare coverage from the insurance instead of Medicare itself.

Look on Medicare.gov. You should be able to find medical and Part D drug coverage without a large deductible.

" See if there are any Medicare Advantage plans available in their state then compare the coverages to their current plan. Most states have a Senior Assistance Org. that may assist in finding these plans. They will NOT advise on which one to choose but it is at least a start at seeing what is available to them. In my state the Advantage plan I have covers all deductables and I have no co-pays for office visits, The main problem I have now is the Prescription Plan Donut hole. I have some spendy prescriptions and hit the hole in July and from there forward have to pay full price for them. Generic drugs I get by with a co-pay in the hole but with name brands that have no generic am stuck. Good Luck on the journey and hope you find a solution. "

" Check with your pharmacy or the drug mfg co. There are many manufacturer assistance programs to help people with limited incomes. I got turned on to this by Walgreen's. They seem to know if there's a program or beneficial 'coupon' out there.
You can also check the drug company's website. "

" I know this comment was posted 2 years ago, but if you still need advice. I noticed that you live in Florida. My advice would be to contact the Florida SHINE program.

SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders) is a free program offered by the Florida Department of Elder Affairs and your local Area Agency on Aging. Specially trained volunteers can assist you with your Medicare, Medicaid, and health insurance questions by providing one-on-one counseling and information. SHINE services are free, unbiased, and confidential.

The SHINE program supports the Florida Department of Elder Affairs’ mission by providing free and unbiased health insurance counseling through a dedicated network of volunteers, empowering Florida seniors to make informed health care choices.

Their phone number is 1-800-963-5337.

If you have any other Medicare, please contact me via Daily Strength.

Take care,

Darryl "
