For me, what made the difference is that I went to the local Aging and Disability Resource center (sometimes it is just the Senior Center, or something along those lines; it depends on the area). They had worked a bit with me before and the person I normally talked with pointed me to a person who specifically knew how to deal with the application. After talking with me, she helped me fill out the application and it was mailed from the ADRC right away. I got approved right after that. Before, I had applied, got denied, appealed, and got a confusing letter and by the time I found out what it was (a denial letter), I missed the deadline to apply. The reason I missed it was because I kept getting the run around at the SSI office and I was too frustrated to do much work. I learned after that you have to either do a lot of work by yourself or get someone to help you that knows what you are doing. Therefore, I applied again (started at step one) and when I was denied again, I went to the ADRC .
I don't know why I was denied so much. I have autism, bipolar disorder, fibromyaliga and about 17 or more other issues. So, it seems to me they always deny people the first time around to see if people are willing to do whatever it takes to get help. Just keep fighting.

Well my wife is blind and has fibro, but because she's blind she instantly qualifies for SSI and medicaid, so...for her it wasn't a lengthy process, it was just going to doctors and then finding a place that works for blind people and they did it for her.
Ironic...she gets SSI for her blindness, but it's the fibro and chronic pain that prevents her from working NOT her blindness. I would like to get SSI because I have a various set of emotional and mental disabilities, but because I can see and hear and walk I have to go through a much more lengthy of a process, whereas she picked up the phone called a number and x,y, and z happened. So yeah :) def. a lengthy process, and certain disabilities have more advantages over others >.>

I help people get different benefits just for the fun of it. First off, don't tell SSA what you can do, tell them what you can't do, down to the minor details ie can't do laundry, need help getting out of bed, too tired to stand up cooking. Next know the difference between SSI and SSDI. I was on SSI for years. Then I got a letter in the mail. Three criteria, not married, parent collecting social security, disabled before age 21, thats me!So, I was able to provide medical records showing I was considered sick and sure enough I got back pay and SSDI. Give it a shot and be prepared to get turned down more than once. Also, get some social worker or doc to fill out your paperwork shows how helpless you truly are!!

I fought for 7 years to get mine. Finally got it.
Make sure to get IN detail forms filled out by EACH and All Doctors. make sure to also keep a ongoing list of all meds you are on and the sides that they cause for you (not those listed But what they do to You) Keep a diary a journal and be Honest in what you as said above can not do have issues with pain when you nap when you have to sit etc etc etc. Everything aincluding your moods what you feel etc. I had a lawyer the first LOST my paperwork forgot to turn it in this was reason i was so long fighting So Get some feedback locally on legal representation. For those who are in fact disabled and have a doctor stating that you are for a year You can (at least in MD) get money from Social Services to help you get by until you get approved. Good Luck

I have applied for and been turened down 3 times, I am taking care of my 100% disablrd hubby, ands can not work because of my health, and to tell u the truth, I honestly don't think that people like he and I have a chance with this gov't., it is hard to live on $1200,00 a month, me with no kind of insurance, and my health getting worse...I am tempted to ask them do they want to try to take care of him, course I wouldn't dare trust him to anyone else, it's just the principal of the thing! I can no longer work, have no form of insurance, I would be happy with Medicaid, just to keep me healthy enough to take care of him! I know it is a gov't conspiracy, to weed out all the disabled vets, and their caregivers, there is no other answer I can think of!!!!
