" I don't understand. SSI is a federal program and people on it don't necessarily have any health care of any kind unless they are also on Medicaid (A federal program that is administered by each state). With the new Parity law signed into law by Bush in October, ALL health care programs including medicaid must give equal weight to mental as well as physical health. I do not understand who is telling you to wait 4-6 hrs where? That just doesn't make sense to me. Heck, move out if NY is really like that. I live in WA and have all the support I need. Keep making phone calls to OTHER people and ASK EVERYONE for referrals to someone else if they don't answer your needs. I spent 1 1/2 yrs fighting my system for treatment that was not normally covered and I won but it nearly killed me. Fight, fight fight and ask ask ask and call call call. The squeaky wheel gets the oil. You can start with 1-800-Suicide (no, you don't have to be suicidal) and they will connect you with your local crisis line and they will help you connect to local help. "

" There are mental health clinics that anyone can use including people on SSI with medi-cal/medicaid.

I live in California and there are clinics for this type of care. "

" Actually the new parity bill does not affect Medicare or Medicaid, only employer-sponsored health plans of companies with more than 50 employees. Grrrr... Look into whether NY has it's own parity laws. I live in CA and we do. However, people with Medicaid here also have to jump through crazy ridiculous hoops to get mental health care. I would suggest calling LegalAid or asking about advocate services. They should be able to help you figure something out. Good luck! "
