This is not new to me but becoming much much more frequent, almost every night now.
For some time but only now and then I get horrendous leg cramps. Not like a regular charlie horse, but down the front of my shins, my back side of my ankles and sometimes it grabs by toes and turns them under so tight that I cannot move them with my fingers. Once in a rare while I do get regular cramps in my back of my thigh, inside my thigh or my calf but mostly it is these weird ones. Last year my doctor send me to the neuro for testing where they do the needles and the electric shock thing. Nothing happened and my tests came back normal. These are excrutiating, the ankle, toes and shin ones are so bad that I wake up screaming, but I cannot do anything but wait them out. It does no good to rub them, sometimes that makes them worse. The muscle or ligimate in there gets so tight it stands out. I put my feet on the floor but no you cannot stand up. I think sometimes if I forces myself onto my feet they might actaully snap or tear. Taking Potassium does not help, legs cramp pills w/quinine don't help or eating bananas. They are getting worse and worse and more frequent. When my illness began 20 plus years ago my neuro and neuro surgeon who saw me in Kansas City was sure I had MS due to other symptoms like numb on one side and more. MRI's show no sign on it even last year. I cannot have the fluid test as I have a Arnold's Chiari type A or herniation of the cerebelum and they are afraid to pull fluid for fear of more herniation. Does anyone have a clue. I am miserable, not sleeping much with this. Thank you, Pat Posted on 06/23/08, 09:06 am |

What about Vitamin D??? It is so important to get enough and it is very common for people to be dificient in it.
I started getting legs cramps. Nothing like what you are describing but my legs, ankles, calves constantly cramping and I would have a hard time sleeping. Then I found out not having enough Vitamin D can cause that. I started taking it every day and it has stopped the cramping. I take 1,000 to 2,000 IU a day. I get gel capsules that are plant derived. It is also a good idea to take calcium. Calcium and Vitamin D work well together. Good luck I hope you feel better soon! Tori

hammyhoney made a good suggestion. I use quinine for leg cramps also. I get homeopathics pills called "leg cramps with quinine" from the link below. It is the cheapest price that I have found.
I sometimes get leg cramps about half as bad as what you described. I have a slide in camper with tha bed up over the cab of the truck. I have gotten cramps while in bed and I couldn't get down to walk it off, and it wouldn't go away. These pills help. http://organicpharmacy.org/conditi...

I know you have taken some quinine pills, are they the same? Bananas help me a little long term but I still had too much trouble.
One other thing that helped was pickle juise. I would buy the "butter chips" and drink the juice. There are other issues with doing that like HFCS and probably a bunch of other things, but when my legs were cramping, I didn't care. The pickles did taste good too.

I would also take Zinc since it is great for a lot of things. And, most americans do not have nearly the zinc we need in our diets.
I also take fish oil tablets every day for Lyme Disease and that really helps as well.

Excrutiating pains at night are causing you great distress, Pat. I hope you can help yourself. Specialists look at one part of my body too closely and can miss out knowing that a pain originates somewhere else.
I was glad I got help from an occupational therapist who looked at my whole body when I had excrutiating pain in my arm at night, First, I used emergency methods, cold packs, heat packs etc. I learned exercises to strengthen my muscles to hold myself better. I even learned a bed position that helped because I wasn't causing pressure that contributed to the pain. I lie on my stomach without a pillow and with my arms at my sides. Then I gradually turn on my left side while drawing up my right knee and leg and right hand to my head. I turn my head on my left ear and make sure my shoulder and head are loosened before I relax into the position. Even lying 5-10 minutes this way helps my arm by releasing pressure that contributes to my pain. Then I can do this on my right side. I know that arm pain can originate with something in my shoulder, I don't know where leg pain can originate. I know that strengthen muscles through daily routines, even starting in bed with leg swings etc. help me to get my muscles to support me better. Peace and love GrandmaRosemary
