i've asked on my RA boards and no go to this new sympton for me so i ask all of you if this is part of MCTD. I get alot of pain in baby fingers to wrists and from wrists to elbow. All thru the hands and wrists but more consistent in this area. Anyway, I get alot of muscle? contractions and this is what has happened twice in the last 2 days. Just holding book and newspaper.... left hand contracted to the point of deformity. 2nd knuckle popped up huge on back of hand and next 2 knuckles (pinky and next finger) sunk into the palm and popped thru. Hurt like heck to touch them. These 2 fingers folded under the side of the palm and hand was stuck in a folded long half postion. The whole hand hurt like hell. Lasted both times about 2 minutes. What is this? I thought carpals Tunnel the last months but this new thing with the knuckles actually moving freaked me out. Anyone have this happen?

I have had some twitching in my hands, and I have been more clumsy and drop things more often, but nothing quite as dramatic as what you describe.
This does sound a bit like some kind of RSI. Do you use your hands a lot? Overall, I think I do get more cramps than most people in my legs and hands, and I know that my electromyogram back in the '70s showed excess muscle activity.

Hi Cat, what is RSI? I am calling docs office today. He lowered my MTX dose last month and joint pain creeped back over a few weeks. What a ride this is.
I don't use my hands excessively. I've had the nerve/muscle twitches over whole body for 3 years. During heavier flare periods they are nonstop and I can actually see them. I did go back to the wrists and hand splints full time for now and it is helping. Thanks for the reply.

I get terrible cramps in my hands at times. Dr said due to the sclerederma. Don't know if that is part of your MCTD or not.I cannot write now and hard to turn pages on newspaper with out the muscle spasms. hugs

I have muscle cramps almost all the time in my hands to my wrist and sometimes to elbows. mine is on the oppisite end, thumbs to pointer finers, to knuckles, thumbs to wrist and wrist to elbows. Sometimes, my pinky fingers feel like glass is going in them when I rub then across a smooth surface when I'm in a gull flair. Today is just an awful day period.

I hands have been know to lock is a arthritic pose, and have done for yrs before I even knew about MCTD, I had my carpol done and since then it has not happen so much but it still does now and then.
my main one is calf cramps and foor/toe cramps and I got given quinine at the GP last night. I always thought cramps was lack of salt but the lifeguard at the pool said lack of iron. but my bloods were good last week, which may have been due to the cortasion injects. Any way back to cramps you can get quinine from tonic water and some say a glass or two before bed helps. I drink it and when I am drinking it my cramps are still there but not necessarly as bad. but this is not proof please beaware that it is as with everything with this an individaul cause and effect ratio. Hugs to all Tiggy

Hey, GOS,
Sorry for the late reply, was out of town. RSI is repetitive stress injury, usually from typing too much at a keyboard-- and that does not sound like it. While we are all complaining about this, I should note that my fingers are getting numb more often these days, particularly the right index finger. Sounds a bit like Raynaud's to me. It is also worse when I rub the finger over a smooth surface, as someone noted... not so bad as broken glass, more like a fingernails on blackboard sensation. Given all of this, I think I'm done with bodyboarding for the season. If my fingers feel GREAT on Monday, and it's really warm, maybe I'll go in one last time, but I'm thinking not... cold weather definitely makes the numbness worse (slightly off topic here.) --Cat

Thanks for all your replys. It hasn't happened again but my hands are much more achy everyday again instead of the relief i was getting. My Vit panels are good and i do bananas everyday and also take magnesium for the muscles.
Cat, it does sound like raynauds starting. You've never had it before? Man, it can get so bad. Right down to the numbing being so painful you can't even pick up a pencil or paper. The first winter I had it, i only had burning and numbing a couple times, no color changes, and just blew it off without knowing what it was. Last winter it knocked me on my butt. This year , I started Cardizem for it and although it doesn't completely block it, it makes it much more bearable so far. I'm praying it continues to help when winter actually gets here. As active and outdoorsy as you are, I really hope you don't have it. Hugs, donna

I experienced a period of 3 days where my left hand would not work at all, severe pain during the night with no sleep, it's terrible to try to put your socks on or take the cap off toothpaste, you get what I mean, couldn't wash the right side of my body, then it will go away and another joint will act up.
