i had a question as far as my medical insurance. this year they changed it so now my husband and i have to pay a $5000 deductable before they pay anything on medical or prescriptions. so right now everything is being paid 100% because we have met that. but come jan 2010 we will have to pay 100% to even get meds, and i wont even be put on them until this month (while there free) come jan i wont be able to afford any meds. im laid off and my husbands job is only working 4 days a week, no one as far as county will help. they say we make too much money. LOL does anyone know any programs that i could contact for help, a web site anything. i live in ohio

" Wow, that sucks-- and I thought I was having a bad day! I am also out of work, lucky spouse is employed and I have some savings.

No good ideas right off the top off my head, just a couple of bad ones that probably won't work. What I would do? Take cheap drugs until you hit the deductible. Typically, old drugs are cheaper than new ones. I seem to remember that prednisone was not that expensive... it always worked well for me, except for making me completely crazy, which was a good fit for my lifestyle at the time.

I know you have trouble with pills from other posts, but if there's any way around that-- crushing the pills and mixing them with apple sauce (IF and only IF the doctor says it's okay! Always check!) sometimes works. I remember that's what people did in the '70s with peyote, and if anyone can find a way to swallow that, they can swallow anything. I know MCTD can make it hard to swallow, and I had episodic problems with that myself.

I do have a friend in Ohio. I will ask if he knows of any programs. It is a very, very long shot.

Good luck,

--Cat "

" Try calling the drug company that makes your meds and see what kind of program they have for people without insurance! You will probably have to get some info from your Dr. You might also ask your Dr about samples of what you are taking and request a discount on your care. Many Dr will do that and most hospitals too. My hospital gives a 40% discount for people without insurance. Just a drop in the bucket, I know, but better than nothing!
As for those who think we dont need health care reform, well..........

" I am in the same boat, but I am in Canada. I applied for a program that is based on income and you just have to pay the deductible, but I haven't heard back from them yet. We are self employed with no benefits so everything is out of pocket. It has been tough this year, but business is picking up. I hope you find some help. "

" Some of the pharmacies have programs, Walmart has a $4.00 Program, Walgreens started something new, 3 months/$12.00. Like Cat said, stick with the older drugs (generics), So sorry girl, this must be awful. Take care. "
