My insurance will no longer cover the IV treatment, but I have 100% coverage for the injectible version of the medicine. But thisis all screwy. It comes in a powder form which needs to be diluted in saline. They do not cover the saline. ??? So, I have to buy bags of saline and the needles. Why would they be willing to send me the powder and not the solution and devices I need to administer the medicine? Doesn't make sense. It's not a huge deal, I don't think saline and needles will be too expensive.
Has anyone done the injectibles?? I don't know anything about them. As of now, I am without IV meds and simply flushing my line. Hopefully I can get this going again in about a week. Posted on 10/30/09, 01:10 pm |

How incredibly frustrating this must be for you. I don't have any information, but wanted to at least post and tell you how sorry I am that all this is happening to you. This just does not need to be so darn complicated. How ridiculous is it to put a sick person through all this?

Thanks. I am trying not to let it bother me. I have to laugh though cause insurance companies are stupid, plain stupid. How can they give me meds without the proper means to take the meds. Seems like a liability. What am I supposed to do, melt the powder over a spoon? I've seen enough movies, I think I can do it, lol. Also, I even quickly thought about trying out one of those clean needle programs drug addicts can use. lol. Hey, but really, why can they get free needles and I can't?? HA!

Yes the saline should be cheap but I seem to recall it wasn't, even when our vet prescribed some for our cat. Still if you or a friend has a less stingy veterinarian than ours, you might want to ask them. I don't think they will give you needles, though. Do you know anyone who works in a lab? When I was a kid my dad would bring all kinds of things home, including saline, distilled water, and all manner of test tubes and things (no needles that I got my hands on, anyway).

When I worked at the nursing home I could have all the saline I wanted. I could have mailed it to you -- like contraband, LOL. I don't have any access, now.

Well, it was a no go. Everything was just too complicated. I got my line pulled. On one hand I am excited. On the other I am disappointed. But, my husband and I are switching insurance through open-enrollment and I should be able to do IV again in the new year.
