My neighbor’s GP says he has ehrlichiosis. He was working in his backyard (we live in the redwoods near Santa Cruz, CA), whacking his way through blackberry canes, when he thought a spider bit him on his right foot.
About a week later (just last week) his leg got really swollen and painful and he had a rash around the bite location. He went to his GP who diagnosed ehrlichiosis and put him on Bactrim and Rifampin, along with Mobic (for inflammation) and Vicodin (to brighten his day). The inflammation went down right away and the rash disappeared, but he still has trouble walking for more than half an hour (this guy is a jogger). I just thought I would let people know because I thought it was a really quick diagnosis on the doc’s part, and quite clever. Pam Weintraub speaks highly of Rifampin for co-infections in her book. I don’t think he ran a Western Blot...should my neighbor ask for this? I don’t want him to get freaked out about Lyme’s, but...? -FM Posted on 07/04/09, 12:07 pm |

Wow. I'm glad he got prompt treatment. He may not need the Western Blot until his body has a chance to make the antibodies. And he really won't need it unless he has persisting symptoms since you can test positive for this test and have no symptoms whatsoever. (Apparently, there are either many false positives or you can have it and not be sick.)
Anyways, since bactrim is an antibiotic, he most likely will be okay w/ the lyme too. i wonder if he shouldn't just take 30 days of doxy...I'd rather be safe than sorry...who wants to mess with this stuff.
