What is valerian root used for?
People use valerian to relieve anxiety, depression, and poor sleep, and also to ease menstrual and stomach cramps. Research shows valerian has a mild calming effect that does not usually result in sleepiness the next day.2 As a sleep aid, valerian seems to be most effective for people who have trouble falling asleep and who consider themselves to be poor sleepers. It also has had good results for people who wake up during the night. Some studies show that valerian may provide quick relief for poor sleep; however, it may take 2 to 4 weeks of daily use to bring improved sleep for people with serious insomnia.1

" Reddutchgirl,

Nighttime tea with valerian? Do you have to buy this in a health food store or can you get it in a regular grocery store? I'd like to give a try. I've been having a horrible time sleeping again, so it's definitely worth a try.

Thanks,

Melissa "

" I buy mine in the health food store and you can get it online. Kroger may have some, I can't remember if I saw it there or some other grocery store. My favorite has mint in it and is very delicious. I wish I could remember the name brand. I put my tea in decorated tins so I don't have the packaging anymore. "

" FYI, they also make the valerian root in drops that you can use sublingual or in a tea as well. This root is what they use in Valium, in case anyone is wondering. "

" Check with your doc about valerian root; it does NOT mix well will all the drugs we take. It's distantly related to valium and so you want to be careful and not end up double-dosing yourself by taking valerian root when you're taking other meds to sleep.

Just clear it with your doc first and get a recommended dose. And remember, all health food meds are NOT created equally, some have higher proportions of the active ingredient than others, some break down better than others (especially chelated forms of certain minerals and herbs) and hard to know how pure what you are getting is. It's a tricky thing using these meds without the help of a legitimate doc who handles holistic meds. So be careful.

" Melatonin is another one that help people sleep. My self I can not take either. As tracy says sometimes they don't mix with prescription drugs. I like the nighty nite tea when I can find it. Tastes horrible but a little honey helps. I live in a very small town and city long ways away. hugs marilyn "
