Discussion:
elevated liver enzymes

I experienced this back in May 09, and went into liver toxicity, my doctor took my off my imuran, and my liver function improved in the hospital almost immediately. He had intentionally kept me off any immune suppresent since them, and not even tylenol. Now my liver enzymes are very high again, creeping up to almost 4 times what they should be. Does anyone else have this issue, and is it a Lupus issue? Any input is so appreciated. I am really going through a tough time right now. Thank you , Mary

" My ast & alt have been very high since last October so a year... but they go down when I am in the hospital on high doses of suli-medrol so they think I have auto-immune liver disease/heptitis... it will be confirmed Monday when I have a biopsy... I read in my lupus book this can be common with lupus.... "

" When I was hospitalized with it back in May, I had low grade fever, feeling very ill generally, very tired, more than the usual autoimmune fatigue, and nausea and lack of appetite. The doctors did mention that it could have very well been autoimmune hepatitis and took me off the imuran anyway and my numbers went down, so they never mentioned the hepatitis again, but I am going to ask them, I am now having low grade fevers daily, and alot of nausea, I am taking a RX for the nausea and its not even really helping, I feel awful, and I willl be going in to repeat all my labs next week and we will go from there. Would then need to do a biopsy to confirm if I do have autoimmune hepatitis??? There does not seem to be alot of information about it. Even on here, thanks "

" well for me they are pretty certain it is auto-immune liver disease/heptitis because my levels have been very high for a year now and when I am on high doses of suli-medrol they magically go down therefor indicating it's auto-immune but yes a biopsy is needed to confirm it... I had a ct scan and u/s of my liver first that showed no masses or anything so I am sure they would do that first on you then if that comes back clean then the biopsy is needed... But I had two 4 doctors tell me I needed the biopsy.... (my general doctor, Hospital doctor, Lupus doctor in PA & liver specialist) "
