Hi everyone!
I have been on Plaquenil for about 4 weeks now---I first came onto this website asking for advice on this med.-(-Thanks to all) I heard great experiences with this med. After reading I did not hesitate to give it a try....I am thankful that I can say--I am starting to have good days!!! I am soooo happy--I tell you this seems to be a miracle drug!--but anyway--my question would be to any one of you---have you ever experienced the weirdest chill on your head--and thumping/deafness in the ears! It hasn't happend very often to me--I would say at least 4 times this last month---Might this be a side affect? I never felt this weirdness before--and I cant really find the words to describe it--but the chills-would best describe it- I feel it only all over my entire head. And the thumping and deafness in the ears, has happend twice--lasts about 1 minute-then goes away....
I dont have a rheumy appt until the 8th--I want to ask him-but I thought you ladies can let me know if any of you have felt this----I had stomach problems at first-but that seems to be ok now....
Well thanks--i appreciate any advice--take care, and best wishes to all.

" Can't say I've ever heard of this as a side effect. I just had really psychodelic dreams, myself.

Tinitis can be a symptom of aspirin type drugs. Are you taking any other medications?

" Tracy--Tell me about it--I have had scary dreams--I wake up from the scariest dream and then I wake up and I think I am about to have an anixety attack--Im so scared all of a sudden and my chest is pounding ----then I start praying and it goes away thank God---but to answer you question I dont take anything else except vitamins and supplements---
My head feels so weird--I cant even explain it.... If it is not dangerous--I wont even worry becuase the med seems to be doing more good than bad.....but I was just curious at what the heck it could be. Maybe stress...oh I dont know...
thanks "

" Ok, I have had the ear thumping and I have no idea what it is from (i am on plaquenil, prednison, mtx, aspirin, paxil, plus others...Geesh). It is exactly how you described it! The chills, no...But there are so many weird symptoms of lupus that it could be one of them. I get thumping in my body when I am in a flare (like right now) where i can feel my blood pumping thru my entire body (especially my feet and legs). I am assuming this is from inflamation but really have no idea.

I also have nightmares every single night and I have been told that it is your brain dealing with the fears that you stuff away during the day. That makes sense to me because I am a complete stuffer and I have been to hell and back with my health. My biggest fear in life is death and I obscess about it every day. Anxiety and panic attacks I have been dealing with since I was a kid.........If you never had nightmares before (which I did) it could be from the plaquenil? I know some drugs can cause nightmares.

Tracy....Learned something new from you :) On aspirin and get the ringing and thumping in my ears....Probably from that.
hugs
Melissa "

" My pharmacy insert for Plaquenil states that "ringing in the ear/hearing loss" are rare but serious side effects of the medication and they should be reported to a docto. It doesn't mention "thumping." Could that be your pulse? I'd report the deafness though! "

" Hi, I have been on plaquinil for over 2 years and I have had a few chills, but I am not convinced that it was the plaquinil. And it has I have had ringing ears and I have had the thumping ears, but mostly when I was getting a sinus infection or had a cold. It is just annoying and I spend a lot of time holding my nose shut and blowing to get my ears to pop. It wouldn't last long. I remember what it was like before the plaquinil and I will put up with a few thumps and chills for the difference from then to now. I know for a fact that I would be so bad that I wouldn't be able to work if I didn't have the plaquinil to "hold the line" and hold back the lupus. Give it some time and do report problems to your Rheumy. "
