Starting to get some press...I haven't heard anything about the abuse tie to lupus though? But I guess it could be relative to the stress which is a trigger. Hopefully the Jackson family or autopsy will confirm officially that he had lupus.

Spiritual teacher and medical doctor Deepak Chopra tells PEOPLE that his longtime friend Michael Jackson suffered from lupus, an autoimmune disease, and a skin disorder for many years.

"He had been diagnosed with lupus and he had vitiligo," Chopra says. "There's some recent research that suggests that if children have experienced either physical or verbal, mental, emotional or sexual abuse, then 20, 30 years later they can develop these autoimmune diseases including lupus."

He adds, "Michael, he was never sexually abused but according to him, he was traumatized verbally and physically in his childhood, and it was a big issue with him."

Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that can damage any part of the body, and Chopra said it can cause skin discoloration known as vitiligo. "He had a lot of blotches on his skin, huge white patches all over his body. So he would cover up his body and that of course gave food for fodder to the press," Chopra says.

And Jackson was no stranger to pain medication. At various points in his life, he used Oxycontin, Vicodin and Demerol, Chopra said.

Chopra's son, Gotham, who was also close to Jackson, also says that the singer, 50, had lupus, but it was his skin disorder that bothered him.

"It was very disturbing to him that people thought he always wanted to be white and he was bleaching his skin. [But] he identified as being a black person and so it was troubling to him that everyone thought that he was a hater of his own race," Gotham explains. "And the lupus, why he didn't just come out more clearly and say that was the problem, I'm not sure. But I know it was something that bothered him a lot."

" The exact cause of lupus is not known. Feeling very tired, having joint pain or swelling, a fever, and skin rashes are common symptoms. Michael suffered from vitiligo and lupus during the last 15 years of his life. But fans mourning the recent loss of the King of Pop are eagerly awaiting results of the Michael Jackson autopsy. The Michael Jackson autopsy is proving to be a point of intense interest and discussion, as a death from heart attack does not befit a man of only 50 years of age. Many fans ponder just what happened, and would give cash from http://personalmoneystore.com/pers... to see the results of the Michael Jackson autopsy. "

" I think his white skin was a result of the vitiligo not the lupus. From what I understand, vitiligo causes pigmentation issues. I don't know if he was bleaching his skin or if it was all due to the vitiligo. I know there has been a lot of rumors on Lupus sites for a while that MJ had lupus, but this is the first time I recall anyone on record from his camp confirming it. I really think abuse is a major stressor as some of you mentioned and that is the environmental trigger (stress)that can cause lupus in those with the right (or wrong, lol) genes. "

" Actually, come to think of it, I started getting brown, reddish(looking almost blueish) patches and rashes on my arms mostly. This was at least a couple of years before I was diagnosed with Lupus. The Plaquinil helps. "

" ya I have the patches on my lower chest, the dermatologist told me to use "selsum blue" the shampoo all over it and would go away, well it didn't. It was a weird name but can't remember it. but now since I have the discoid lupus, the skin on my face is discolored...white patches with darker ones, hard to explain.

hugs everyone,
paige "

" I agree with Allison and Virginia---I really believe our bodies are predispositioned to have this disease or any other autoimmune disease---why? Because I had a beautiful childhood--I could say it was perfect thank God--BUT (theres the BUT) I have always been a person who stresses over everything!!!! As a kid I was the same way--I would stress over the dumbest things! As I got older I still stressed over everything! Now 37 years into my life I STILL STRESS over everything-now I guess I really do have reasons to stress-as do we all---I believe that our stress contributes greatly to an autoimmune disease--WE all dont have the system to deal with it very well----thus--thats why we have health issues....Well thats my input --sorry Im not a professional or anything--this is just my personal experience---hugs to all!
