Starting to get some press...I haven't heard anything about the abuse tie to lupus though? But I guess it could be relative to the stress which is a trigger. Hopefully the Jackson family or autopsy will confirm officially that he had lupus.
Heather Spiritual teacher and medical doctor Deepak Chopra tells PEOPLE that his longtime friend Michael Jackson suffered from lupus, an autoimmune disease, and a skin disorder for many years. "He had been diagnosed with lupus and he had vitiligo," Chopra says. "There's some recent research that suggests that if children have experienced either physical or verbal, mental, emotional or sexual abuse, then 20, 30 years later they can develop these autoimmune diseases including lupus." He adds, "Michael, he was never sexually abused but according to him, he was traumatized verbally and physically in his childhood, and it was a big issue with him." Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that can damage any part of the body, and Chopra said it can cause skin discoloration known as vitiligo. "He had a lot of blotches on his skin, huge white patches all over his body. So he would cover up his body and that of course gave food for fodder to the press," Chopra says. And Jackson was no stranger to pain medication. At various points in his life, he used Oxycontin, Vicodin and Demerol, Chopra said. Chopra's son, Gotham, who was also close to Jackson, also says that the singer, 50, had lupus, but it was his skin disorder that bothered him. "It was very disturbing to him that people thought he always wanted to be white and he was bleaching his skin. [But] he identified as being a black person and so it was troubling to him that everyone thought that he was a hater of his own race," Gotham explains. "And the lupus, why he didn't just come out more clearly and say that was the problem, I'm not sure. But I know it was something that bothered him a lot." Posted on 06/28/09, 12:06 pm |

I agree that mental,physical,or sexual abuse does not cause Lupus, I am thinking now that stress can, I know it is very bad for us. I to am a very stressful person, I stress over everything...the littlest to the biggest and have my whole life. I wish I didn't and I am trying to control it, but dang it is hard. :o)

I was also healthy leading up to 29, minus a few minor things. I did have fainting spells after being in the sun too long but that can effect anyone. I think hormones triggered mine. I remember feeling so exhausted but I thought it was from being up with a baby all night.
By the way if Michael was on Demerol he must have had some major pain issues. That stuff will wipe you out.

Im kind of late in replying to this but I truely believe that an emotionally stressful childhood/adulthood can absouletly cause auto immune issues as well as other diseases...Stress is toxic to our bodies...Why allison do you think that so many men suffer from heart attacks? Its from the stress breaking down the body. Some of us handle stress and our emotions differently. I had a crappy childhood, not abusive by beatings, but my mother was extrememly emotionally abusive to me. I was always beaten up in school and stuffed my feelings of sadness my entire life. I dont handle stress well and I have been sick since I was 7 years old. And alot of them were auto immune issues. I have met so many women that have had traumatic childhoods, like mine was, who have auto immune disease's like Lupus, so i really believe there has to be a connection. When I get stressed out, I flare. Period. I dont think that just because you didnt have the picture perfect childhood you WILL have disease's but if you dont handle your emotions in a healthy way I think that chances are its going to affect your health in one way or another. Especially if you are pre-disposed to it. I believe there have been studies done on infants who were given massive amounts of love and attention versus infants in orphanages who were never really touched or loved..The children who were not given the same love and attention Failed to Thrive compared to the babies that were given love and attention.
Just my personal opinion that I believe there is a link.

I know what you are saying, and agree that stress definately can make disease worse, or bring out something wrong with you already. I don't think stress alone causes disease. I think there are multiple factors at play. If that were true the whole world would be sick, because stress in life is hard to completely hide from. I think someone who may have had a sad childhood, but no other factors causing the disease can still live a healthy life.
