I can't answer your question but I would be interested in knowing if it's okay too. I've been wanting to get one done. But been afraid it would cause problems with my Lupus.

i was wondering the same thing, cause i want a small one just above my ankle....i typed it into google, and someone said that you shouldn't have a tat done if your lupus is flared and if you are on steroid treatment as more likely to get infection - which sucks for me, cause ive been on steroids for 4 years continuously and a flare since last xmas...
gonna get one in the future as a symbol of getting better lol
i hope you find the answer for you!!...have u asked your doc?

I have one on my ankle and had no problems. I do know that if you have to get an MRI you shoud tell the technician that you have a tattoo. My family doc had just come back from a conference and informed me of that one. It can mess up the imaging. If it is something that you really want to do, I would get it at a reputible place that uses new needles.

You should know that tattoo ink has mercury and too much levels of mercury in your body is not good. It causes joint pains (mercury). Also it is not FDA regulated.
If you are currently taking Lupus medication that is an immunosuppresant..that it might take longer for you tattoo to heal and risk of infection is there. It's your choice eventually.

I am in a flare and I'm on Prednisone, methotrexate, mobic, lyrica and cymbalta and I got at tattoo just over 3 weeks ago. I was very careful in being sure that it stayed clean to help prevent infection. I was also sure to get a small one because I figured it would be easier to take care of during the healing process. It is fully healed now with absolutly no complications. Just remember though everybody is different. If you are extremely prone to infection I wouldn't suggest it until your immune system is able to stop infection a little better. I would love to hear other peoples stories as well.

Hi guys,
I was searching CNS lupus since the neuro I just saw thinks I have this. I found a site that specifically speaks about Lupus and tattoo's! Here is the site and just look for lupus and tattoo's. www.cure4lupus.org

Thank you all for replying! I am still in a waiting period for the lupus to subside and because I am not 100% sure about the design I would like. Plus I remember how much some areas in the body hurt. I have a butterfly on left shoulder that would like to retouch to purple which is the logo for Lupus. Maybe Ill get it when I get my transplant some shooting stars and some flyin little butterflies as in "Lupus Fly Away" I use to like piercings but I only have ears and nose that is it. Thanks again and to those that have or will have new tat may you take care of them! Blessings to all!

I got a tattoo just after I was diagnosed. My daughter and I got matching tattoos as a symbol of starting a new life. I had just gone through a divorce and moved to a new city. The one thing I was told is just don't use the colors that there is a tendency of a reaction to like yellow and red. My tattoo is blue, black and a little white. As my daughter and I got it done within one day of each other, I could progress the healing. I healed about the same time that she did but because I am so fair skinned, it didn't take as long for him to do my tattoo than it did for her. Ultimately it is a choice that you have to make but I would suggest just be careful about the colors you chose because that seems to be the big factor. I hope this helps.
