I wanted to share with you all what has been a tremondous help to me and has greatly reduced my pain levels and inflammation. MSM Here is an exerpt form THE NATURAL PHYSICIAN'S HEALING THERAPIES:
"I remember one of my professors in medical school saying that if you can't relieve a patient's pain quickly, the patient will not be coming back to your office. It's true. No one wants to experience pain_and when you're afflicted with it, all you want is relief. Yet chronic, ongoing pain is a major problem for many people. It's been estimated that one-third of all Americans have to deal with it, often as the result of disease. I can't claim that the supplement called MSM will help everyone. But I do know we're fortunate to have it around. It's one of those breakthrough supplements that, for many people, works very effectively to reduce pain and inflammation. MSM is the abbreviation for methylsulfonylmethane. It was originally discovered when research was being done on DMSO--dimethyl-sulfoxide, a related compund tht was known to alleviate pain. One problem with DMSO is that is has a very strong and disagreeable odor. MSM doesn't have the odor, problem and it seems to be just as effective as DMSO--or even more so. Most of the research on MSM has been done by Dr. R. Lawrence of UCLA in California. Both have treated many thousands of people who are afflicted with painful conditions with DMSO and MSM. In their book, The Miracle of MSM, they report that MSM can deliver numerous benefits, including: Pain relief Reduced inflammation Increased blood flow Control of overactive nerve impulses Reduced muscle spasms Softening of scar tissue In addition, MSM has an atiparasitic effect-that is, it helps to resist the invasion of unfriendly parasites. It also has a normalizing effect on the immune system, which means it's useful in treating autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and lupus." He recommends 1,000-2,000 milligrams daily for preventive purposes and for therapeutic purposes the dosage varies depending on body weight, sex and individual need. I have found that 1,000 milligrams in the morning and evening work well for me, but there are times when I increase my dosage to 2,000 milligrams in the morning and evening. WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS? (again from his book) Most people experience no side effects from MSM, thought there have been some reports of digestive upset on high doses. A few people are sensitive to MSM, and have stomach upset, cramping, or diarrhea-so I recommend people start at a lower dosage and then gradually increase the dose every few days. This helps the body adjust to the MSM and reduces the chance fo side effects. If you do have an adverse reaction, you'll probably find that the symptoms go away if you reduce the dosage or-if necessary-stop taking the MSM. I am commonly asked if people allergic to sulfites or sulfa antibiotics can use MSM. The answer is yes. Sulfites and sulfa antibiotics don't have the same chemical make-up of MSM, which contains the mineral sulfur. For dhildren, I start with a very small dose of MSM. The gel or cream is particularly good to use with children for joint or muscle injuries. Athought it has not been studied, the authors also caution against using MSM in conjunction with blood-thinning medications such as heparin. If you are on a blood-thinning medication, consult with your doctor before using MSM. I (my words) hope this may be of help to some. It has already helped me, my stepfather who has RA and my husband who has an old knee injury. Please excuse any typo's as I was typing this with a four-year old vying for my attention. Shoot ... ya know what? My doctor told me to take Glucosomine and Chondrotin. When I asked him if it would help even more if I took a supplement with MSN in it, his answer was, "Only if you want to grow facial hair." I see he's UP on his studies of supplements ... not!
peace and love ... Kyle Anne

That is really funny because I noticed that I was having a lot a facial hair growth about 8 years ago and said something to my mother about it and just got teased. Since I've been on the MSM I don't have to use the hair removal as often. Sure, above the lips and chin is normal, but I don't have it on my cheeks anymore. Thank goodness my hair was white. Might have told ya'll some embarrasing stuff, but I don't care. I don't know if the MSM had anything to do with it, but I darn sure am not complaining about the lack of hair growth.lol The thinning hair (on top of the head) has stopped also, but you know that I have done a lot more things for myself besides the MSM.

My biggest concern is about doing harm with this drug. I checked on to Dr. Lawrence's credentials, since I had never heard of him and I used to WORK at UCLA in addition to having been a patient there for 20+ years.
Dr. Lawrence is NOT a rheumatologist or orthopedist; he is a PSYCHIATRIST!!! He no longer works at UCLA and virtually all the citations for his name had to do with SELLING something. If this were such a big help to arthritis patients, why wasn't the Div. of Rheumy on board with this "study" and why are there no clinical papers about it in any peer review journals??? The info you posted was lifted off a website that was SELLING the drug. Of course THEY are going to say good things; they want to SELL MORE!! MSM has been used for years for animals (as reddutchgirl noted) and is commonly used to allow other drugs to be absorbed through the skin. I have heard lots of rheumies speak (and see lots of them) and none have never stood behind this medication. As for Gluco/Chondrotin, when double-blinded studies were done, it was found to be LESS effective than a placebo. In other words, it does not work when tested in a fair study. Lots of people want to think lots of things work. Please be careful with anything that's not recommended by your doctor. And be careful of the sites you use for information---if statistics can be fudged, especially if money is involved. BTW, medicine is not plumbing or a car mechanic; anyone who firmly believes that a patient won't return if not cured in one visit, well, that's just not the way medicine works. Unless you have something really simple, it WON'T be cured in one visit. I can't believ3e ANY professor in medical school made that statement! Our bodies are complicated and no sane person expects a cure in one visit, even for a wart! Sorry to be a spoil sport, but I've had this disease a very long time and seen MSN come and go 3X already. Remember when Glu/Chon was thought to cure cancer too? It didn't do that either. My biggest concern is that some of you out there reading this will BELIEVE that MSN is curing your disease while damage that you can't see goes on in your bodies, damage that only lab work will show. Please if you're going to use something like this continue to see your rheumy for monitoring even if you feel okay. As we all know, our insides don't always match our outsides.... Tracy

I did not copy this from a website, it was from the book that I have mentioned earlier and it is called MSM not MSN. I was trying to share something that has helped me and I also stated the side effects. It is a supplement and the big pharma is not making money off of it. This book does not sell anything it is a book by a natural physician. BTW all the research on meds is paid by pharmaceutical companies. During a medical sociology class we discussed the problem of the fact that there are no true scientists left. If the scientists don't find what the people who hired them want them to find then they are fired. I experienced no side effects and my inflammation levels went down. It is a very safe supplement, please don't allow fear to rule your decisions. In the word's of Barry Glassner, "If people fear, they will consume." My stepfather has suffered RA and been on many different meds, including pain meds, and said that this supplement has helped him better than any other thing he has tried. I've had the lab work, all kinds of lab work since I have many diseases and this supplement is helping me and many others. You don't want to take it then don't, I do and will continue and my rheumy has approved of it. A real live rheumy!! BTW my rheumy thinks that I have had SLE since I was 13 years old and that would be 23 years, no I was not tested then, but he has done an extensive medical history and we have people drive from over 100 miles to see him. Once again if you read the full post you will see the name of the book is THE NATURAL PHYSICIAN'S HEALING THERAPIES, no web search here.

While rereading the book I realized that I left out Dr. Stanley Jacob of Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland who worked with Dr. R. Lawrence as I said I was typing this while my four year old son was vying for my attention. If you would like to look up his credentials then please do so.

Just to correct you about Dr. Ronald Lawrence. He is a M.D.,Ph.D, Neurologist, Former instructor at UCLA Executive Director, Council on Nutrition. So, no he is not a psychiatrist. I guess we also need to be careful of searches that other people conduct.

Maybe while you were at UCLA he was working for the NIH in Washington, DC. No, he's not a rheumatologist, but he has some pretty impressive credentials.

I agree with the point Tracy was trying to make. I don't believe she was trying to insult you or the fact that it has worked for you in any way. I don't know anything about MSM, so I won't discuss whether I think it is good or bad for you. But online research is not always the best research. People are looking for answers and don't have the time or patience to do the research themselves, so they look online for someone else's research that they blindly trust. I'm speaking in general terms, not to you directly. It is always best to do your homework when researching, especially about anything you want to consume on a regular basis. I am hesitant to start any supplements, I actually did a major thesis on non-FDA approved supplements and the results I came up with were scary. And I am certain I was merely touching on the tip of a very large iceberg. If it's not FDA approved, a company can say anything they want about a particular supplement, they don't even have to tell you every ingredient! I couldn't believe that. I mean we all take things we're not aware of, that's scary. People just need to be careful. And they tell you what the supplement does for you based on their own studies. And very few supplements will tell you anything about possible overdose, drug interactions, side effects, etc. I don't want the company selling an item to be the only one testing it. Doesn't seem very right to me, or safe.
The problem with disease is, we want a fix, a cure, a solution a relief. We don't easily obtain these things if we ever do. Frustrating does not even come close to describing what we feel with auto-immune diseases. The best of the best don't even understand the workings of these diseases, so where does that leave us? We want to diagnose ourselves and treat ourselves. Sometimes to our benefit, sometimes not. We just need to be sure that we discuss everything we do and everything we take with our docs, even over-the-counter stuff. And that's the best advice anyone can give about any thing we are taking into our bodies. Simply discuss it with your doc first, that's the only point I wish to make.
