Hi everyone I have had a strange symptom which is not consistent but every now and then. A couple weeks ago I spit out blood after I got done brushing my teeth and called a nurse advice hotline and she said it sounded like it was due to dental problems since my teeth are not very healthy possible gingivitis, anyhow I am a smoker and was worried that it may be lung cancer. I am also 28years old by the way and she told me if it was lung cancer that I would be coughing up blood not spitting it out now is that true? She said the chances of it being lung cancer were slim to none so at the time I figured I was ok and then all of a sudden yesterday as I was taking a shower some shampoo got in my mouth so I spit it out and there was blood in my spit again I just don't know what to think anymore. Should I be worried? Does this sound like it could be related to lung cancer or am I overreacting to the situation. I also heard that people over 40 years old are more prone to lung cancer, usually not people under 40.I also have Ashma and have been wheezing a little lately I don't know if that could cause that symptom of spitting up blood. Any advice would be deeply appreciated this is weighing heavily on my mind and I want to know what I should do next. Thanks and God Bless.

Hi there you might have a condition that is called periodontis (another gum condition). You should go to the store and buy a waterpik. It pulses water through your teeth and into your gums. You will bleed quite a bit a first but the more you use it the better it will get. Use it everyday and you will not spit out as much blood if any at all. At least start with that and see if it helps. It helps with me anyways. I hope it works for you.

Sleepykitty's advice osounds good. But to be on the safe side you should have a dental check up and an appt. with your PCP. I know it is easier said than done, but stopping smoking would be healthy for you, especially if you are worried now about lung cancer. Though you don't have to be a smoker to develop lung cancer, why increase your chances of the possiblity. Trust me I know.

I agree with the above. Flossing once a day can diminish blood and if you don't it can arise. Since the genetic changes that create lung cancer generally take 20-25 years, the disease is rarely seen in your people. Just to be sure, see your doctor but they are most likely to recommend better gum care, or to diagnose some type of respiratory infection.

Just wanted to say thanks to all the replies. I do plan on seeing a doctor especially a dentist since I really do think it is related to dental problems. Once I get health insurance if for some reason the issue persists even after I get dental treatment I definitly plan on seeing a doctor. I really appreciate all the advice and God Bless all of you.

well, i too think it is gum disease. i have lung cancer for quite a while now. and as yet have not coughed up any blood. my gums do however bleed at times. i blame it on the doc saying not to use mouth wash till the chemo is over. something about it interfering with chemo.
