Dealing with a loved one

Both my aunt and uncle are sick, my uncle with cancer, and my aunt with a rare auto immune disease that attacks the muscles in her body, and has had cervical cancer which has been removed.

I love my uncle, he is my godfather, and its hard to see someone so sick. I know I can't understand what it is like, i can't even begin to try to fathom what is going through his mind, but he is so miserable, so negative, even to his wife, my aunt who is always fighting and being positive, believing in "one day at a time." My uncle, he just seems so discouraged that he becomes mean, almost nasty, trying to pick fights with his family and I think it's driving everyone. His own kids live right next door, and the couple years that this has been going on is hard. His one kid thinks he gets jealous almost of his wife, because she requires more attention to make sure she is safe because she needs help walking and sitting and everything.

I guess what I am asking is, how can I understand? I hate to see such a rift in the family....what can the family do to be supportive, to help?

" Your uncle is consumed with anger and I swear that that is more devestating than any physical illness! He needs an outlet, to be able to voice his feelings to someone other than the people already in his life now. I realize men don't do therapy well, but how about sneaking in a third party there to do a whole lot of listening? Is there someone you could find to arrange this much needed venting for him? Please hang in there for him, I know he will at some time turn you off with his obstinacy. Good luck, your uncle deserves an opportunity to heal from this current pain of his! "
