my mom was told last week that she has lung cancer. we are at a lost. she never smoked, but did live with a smoker. at this point in time, all i really know is that she is having surgery on june 23rd. it is in the left lung, behind the heart and close to the aorta. they can not do a needle biopsy, so when they do surgery, they will remove the top half of the lung. i have done some research and know that there is 2 kinds of lung cancer. small cell and non small cell. i would like to find someone to talk to.

Im am so sorry honey What a blow this has to be.My nephew has lung cancer thats why Im here for support also..My heart goes out to you..Prayers for your family...

I know this is a very difficult time for you and your family. From what you describe it sounds as if your moms tumor is located in the same area as that of my husband, the lingula behind the coronary notch. Because of that location he wasn't able to have a biopsy either.
During his surgery and before proceeding with a lobectomy, a frozen section biopsy was done, it was cancer so they went ahead with the surgery. In his case the upper left lung was taken, but if the frozen section biopsy had come back negative they would have just stitched him back up. 1. She probably has non-small cell lung cancer, adenocarcinoma subgroup. She could have BAC bronchiolocarcinoma or general adenocarcinoma.
2. Non-smoker's lung cancer has been increasing for reasons that are not known. One particular gene, epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) plays a substantial role in non-smoker's lung cancer. Patients are sometimes tested to see whether they are EGFR positive. 3. BAC has different treatments. Adenocarcinoma is treated with surgery if the tumor is small and has not infilitrated lymph nodes. 4. Has she obtained a Ct Scan, you may want to obtain a copy so you understand her status. 5. If surgery is proposed, that is a very good sign. Adenocarcinoma is divided int stages 1-4. For stage 1, the 5 year survival rate after surgery is 60-75%.
