How to cope with the loss of my dad??

Last year in June my dad found a lump on his stomach. At the time he had a biopsy and they said it was nothing serious.
In July my close knit family escorted me and my partner to thailand for our wedding. We had a great time but we could see the change in dad over the few weeks we were there. He became lethargic and his temperature was playing up etc. My mum took him to the doctors when they arrived home and he was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer. I received the news when I arrived home from my honeymoon in late August. From that moment my dad went down hill quick. The cancer spread all over his body in a matter of months - including his brain. He was admitted in and out of hospital time and time again until the last time when he was admitted to a palative care hospital where he passed away -- only 2 and a half weeks ago. I got a call while I was at work to come to the hospital, i thought it was just another false alarm, and by the time I got to the hospital he had passed. 5 minutes before i got there. I hold so much guilt from the past few months. I should have seen him more often. I should have been there when he died. I have been too afraid to grieve because I worry that once I start I might not stop. Can anyone help me and give me some advice on what I can do??? Posted on 02/18/08, 06:02 pm |

Leashly,
I am so sorry for you loss. My mom is sick and I have these weird mixed feelings... I love her and hurt very much over her pain and difficulties, I am helping as much as I can. But I also get these thoughts and anxieties that I want time to heal this.. You know want time to slow down as well as speed up... Bottom line we all must live on while respecting and loving does that must go.... We will all be eventually reunited. God Bless you and hang in there.

Hi Leashy, I am so sorry for your loss. It is difficult and we will always think the what if's. Your Dad knows your were there and loves you. The same exact thing happened with my husband, same diagnosis at all. Was called by the hospital,, rushed there and missed him by about 3 minutes. I know that Robert would have not wanted us there to see him take his last breathe because he would feel it would be too much for us. That is the only way I can see it. I pray that you will find peace. Christine
