What Did You Give Yourself This Holiday Season?

By Julie January 5, 2009 9:49am 3 Comments

OK, the holidays are finally over and I have one question; what did you give to yourself?  The holidays for me are always a mix of looking forward to family gatherings and being exhausted by them both physically and emotionally.  While I enjoy the cooking, the visiting, the giving of presents and the closeness that ensues, I can …

Betrayal: Why is it So Hard to Move On?

By Julie October 19, 2008 6:23pm 49 Comments

As a follow up to the article I wrote about betrayal, one member asked me to write an article about forgiving.  She said, "...to get on with our lives we need to forgive. I was thinking that maybe if you wrote something on HOW we can begin to forgive, it would really help a lot. I want so badly to forgive, but I just can't make myself feel …

Betrayal: Does it Matter if it was Intentional or Not?

By Julie October 15, 2008 12:52am 45 Comments

Betrayal can present itself in so many ways, yet regardless the circumstance why does it always feel like a giant punch in the gut?  Betrayals come in all shapes and sizes such as someone stealing an idea, concept or property.  A betrayal also includes broken promises like when the trust in a relationship is damaged because of an affair …

Loneliness Information

Loneliness is an emotional state in which a person experiences a powerful feeling of emptiness and isolation. Loneliness is more than the feeling of wanting company or wanting to do something with another person. Loneliness is a feeling of being cut off, disconnected and alienated from other people. The lonely person may find it difficult or even impossible to have any form of meaningful human contact. Lonely people often experience a subjective sense of inner emptiness or hollowness, with feelings of separation or isolation from the world.

People can experience loneliness for many reasons, and many life events are associated with it. The lack of friendship relations during childhood and adolescence, or the physical absence of meaningful people around a person are causes for loneliness, depression, and 'incelism'. At the same time loneliness may be a symptom of another social or psychological problem (for example chronic depression) which should be analyzed.

Many people experience loneliness for the first time when they are left alone as an infant. It is also a very common though normally temporary consequence of divorce or the breakup or loss of any important long-term relationship. In these cases, it may stem both from the loss of a specific person and from the withdrawal from social circles caused by the event or the associated sadness.

Loss of a significant person in one's life will typically initiate a grief response; here, one might feel lonely, even in the company of others. Loneliness may also occur after the birth of a child, after marriage or any socially disruptive event, such as moving from one's home town to a university campus. Loneliness can occur within marriages or similar close relationships where there is anger, resentment, or where love cannot be given or received. It may represent a dysfunction of communication. Learning to cope with changes in life patterns is essential in overcoming loneliness.
