Two weeks ago, during a routine check-up I asked my pediatrician if I can get my five year old lead tested. She said that there was probably nothing wrong with him, but went ahead and agreed to it. I seriously didn't think there'd be much point in it either, but I was always a Mom from the "better safe than sorry" school of parenting.
I didn't think anything else about it, and after the blood draw, we went on with our lives.
Two days later, the doctor's office called me back. "GET HIM TO THE HOSPITAL NOW." I remember putting my shoes on, grabbing the baby and the cell phone, and hopping the bus to get him from school. I called the school on the way so they'd have him ready to go and waiting. After x-rays and more testing, I was told that I'd have to get the five year old out of the house permanently. His levels weren't high enough for chelation, but yes, there'd be permanent damage to him.
What about the baby? "Oh, you don't need to test him, he hasn't been chewing on paint."
The health department showed up the next day and after walking through the building told me flat out- get EVERYONE out. There's obvious lead dust in the air.
My MIL flew the kids and I down to her house. My husband is still there- we don't have anywhere else for him to go and he has to stay behind to work.
The landlord never gave us a lead disclosure. She'd completely remodeled the place, so I guess I thought she'd already removed the lead paint. She was still remodeling the unit next door to us, sanding walls and removing molding.

And now I'm so confused. I got the baby tested as soon as we got here, but it'll be a few more days before his results come in. My normally sunny (although active) five year old has gone from active to extremely aggressive and hyper since we'd moved in. The doctor down here is saying he'll need permanent treatment plans, new diets, etc... He's even developed a heart murmur that's never shown up on any prior physicals! (The last one being right before we moved in to the house!)

I'm so confused, so angry, and so tired from all the constant running around I'm doing. I'm trying to let my kids have a normal life, while trying my best to not let them see how terrified I am for their futures.
I'm angry that my landlord is refusing to let us out of our lease without paying a ton of money to break it--- money which we need to even sign a new lease somewhere else, not to mention money I need to pay doctor's bills!

Someone, please tell me that my kids will have a bright future and be able to live to their full potential!

" Yes your children have a great future ahead of them.
you need to have them on chelation (typically oral is better in children.) The blood test is the least reliable for lead testing . Go to a web site called "doctors data" and find their information on testing for lead And other heavy metals) through the urine. they basically use a medicine to get the lead to be pulled from the cells and then it comes out in the urine. then they can find out how much is in his tissues not just still roaming around in the blood.
We never found the souce of the lead but my second grader went from a below reading comprehension to an 8th grade reading comprehension in 6 months. Call homeopathic doctors and alternative medicine doctors. they are much more up to date on these procedures. Are you in Florida, I have a great docotor here who is both naturapathic and an internist.
Diet changes do help but chelation is what is needed. Many autism doctors use chelation also so check that angle out as well for finding treatment.
Call a few lawyers and see if you have a case to make the landlord payfor medical expenses or at a minimum get you out of your lease. there are many that will do a free one hour consultation and ten let you know if they think you have a case. "

" I am in no way a professional but I'm a mom of a child who is almost 18 that received lead poisoning around 2-3 years of age and I can sure feel your pain. I agree with the other poster...get a lawyer!! The landlord needs to be held accountable. SSI, disability also, whatever....lead poisoning is classified also as a traumatic brain injury from the toxic exposure. Do whatever you can now, the sooner the better. I have my fingers crossed for you that your children will be ok but just in case be prepared. Save every medical record, school record, ect that you receive from now on and make all the doctors they come in contact with later on in years see the lead exposure even if you have to carry papers with you. From my experience they tend to blame psychological problems on everything else first before the lead. And if you really want to be financially able to take care of your childrens healthcare needs that needs to be in every report. Hang in there! "
