high lead level, hemochromatosis and Lyme

A year + ago I was diagnosed with Hereditary Hemochromatosis (my body absorbs too much iron due to a genetic defect). I think I treated it before causing any permanent damage. I completed the initial treatment (phlebotomies) and am now on a maintenance phlebotomy schedule.
When my doctor discovered the high iron, she also I discovered I had (still have) an extremely high lead level, for which I am undergoing chelations, but that will be a lengthy process- probably another year. (I suspect the culprit is the water pipes in the house I grew up in- if not that, I have no clue how I got high lead.) The symptoms of the affects these two conditions are similar, so although I was hoping to feel better after the phlebotomies, I felt worse. I assumed it was the high lead. My husband had/has a bad case of Lyme (misdiagnosed for a couple years) and his LLMD (Lyme literate DR) suggested I test for Lyme when I mentioned my symptoms sounded similar to Lyme. Well, I'm positive too. I see my LLMD in a few weeks- then I assume I'll start treatment. THEN maybe I'll feel better. So, I'm kind of amazed (and bummed) that I am unlucky enough to have these 3 conditions. I don't doubt the test results, and really should feel lucky to have discovered I have these conditions before I got real sick. The symptoms are very, very similar in all three, which I find weird. I KNOW HH is under-diagnosed and my opinion is that Lyme is under-diagnosed, and I don't know many people who have had their metals tested, so I don't know about that. Mostly I read about children having high lead. I'm very curious if any of you may have a combo of these ailments? Has anyone else been diagnosed with HH with Lyme? And/or high lead? If you check the symptom lists, you will see the similarities. Could there be some link? If so, I haven't found it, but it just seems strange to me. I will post this in the three blogs (HH, Lyme & Lead), if I am allowed to do so. Your thoughts and input are appreciated! Posted on 01/30/09, 09:28 pm |

My daughter had high lead slevel discovered when she was 8. She did chelation for about 6 months and we saw many improvements. But still struggled with some things. Not sure if she just needed to catch up developmentally or what. Now 2 years later she has been diagnosed with lyme. I am suspicious of her having had it for quite some time. But there is no way to know (We also never found the source of her lead) The rest of the family had very mild levels of lead.
There are many LLMD's who feel that the heavy metals need to be removed in order to best treat the lyme (and any co-infections) I also have lyme.

I have two out of three.
You are right Lyme and Lead poisoning have very similar symptoms -- very strange. After a year of dealing with what I thought were Lyme symptoms I find that my lead levels are extremely high. Don't know what to think yet. Let's try to keep in touch and share any info we find out. OK?

I have stopped doing the lead chelations until I finish treatment for the Lyme. I went into a tailspin awhile back, and I think it was t too hard on my organs to deal with everything at once. My impression is that the high lead will just "sit there" in my bones (hopefully) until I'm ready to deal with it ( I'm guessing the Lyme treatment may take a year) and after that, I'll take it on.
I went into a tailspin after last chelation treatment- just when I discovered I had Lyme (and co-infections) - I think my kidneys, etc. were overburdened with trying to process the circulating lead released from my bones and toxins from Lyme, and high iron. MY HH is well controlled now and I seem to require a phlebotomy every 4 months, so that is do-able. So, I'll finish attacking the Lyme, then try chelations again, per recommendation of my LLMD. Let me know how all you are doing!

Woodwalker- did you complete treatment for Lyme? If, so what and how long?
My chelations were in sessions of 10- one every week or two. Is that what you are doing?

Hi , I don't know if I'm suppose to be in this group but I have babesia and hh. I'm usually on the hh Daily Strength support group . and I see your messages were 2 years ago. I'm trying anything. My docs act as if they are out of touch with my conditions. If you get this message please get back with me. Thanks.
Mike
