What do you do for the Pain?

Trying to be brief, years ago I had the usual symptoms of LI ( although it was years before I was diagnosed properly) but on occasion - starting at maybe 2 times a year, I would have EXTREME symptoms which gradually got worse to being about 2-3 times a month. These extreme symptoms would start with minor pain, bloating, gas and over a period of apx 8 hours get much worse to the point of laying on the floor in a fetal postion in Extreme pain, ( and I really do mean extreme to the point of crying like a baby and wanting to die) after about 7ish hours I would start sweating, Vomit get the chills, then heat up again to vomit again about 30 minutes later and repeat a 3rd time. after the 3rd time there may me a 4th or 5th repeat, but generally 3 times and the pain would receed and an hour later I would be close to normal except for some muscle pain from the repeated vomiting/dry heaves. I had gone to the ER a couple of times during this and they would do basicly nothing except take some blood, give me an IV and pump some ?demoral? into me which didnt seem to do anything for the pain. Well since then I did the lactose test ( after 4 or 5 other DR's who didnt really care enough to do any real tests) and tested positive. Now I take lactaid (generic brands) with 99.9% of everything I eat and my problems have mostly disappeared other than gas which I gladly deal with (my spouse dealing with that is a different story :) ). However Once in a great while for some reason ( not enough lataid pills, bad pills, I dont know why) I still get the above described extreme problem. It is VERY bad pain and like I said, I can feel it coming on hours in advance.
What, if anything, can be done to head of the worst part of this and/or what can be done about the Pain?

" I personally use a LITTLE bit of milk of magnesia....gets things moving quicker, including the gas out of your system.

Not often. Only when I feel it's gonna get really really bad

Otherwise a little pepto bismol helps "

" When I feel symptoms coming, I just eat a few more lactase pills. They go within the hour. If you have gas, maybe take more lactase pills when you eat dairy products or products that have lactose or lactoserum in them... The posology is so different for everyone, taking the amount on the box is not always enough... I know my intolerance is low, so I have to take less, but if yours is high, you have to take more... The gas wouldn't even be there if you took enough lactase units...

Wish that helps... "

" you have got to try GasX. You can buy it at the grocery store or pharmacy. It is made out of the same stuff that makes bubbles smaller for shampoo. It just breaks down the gas bubbles and after years of suffering, I have to tell you, this works in minutes! My second favorite is to make tea out of ginger but it takes much longer. "

" Unfortunately, I have found that you just have to severely reduce your dairy intake to avoid that. The pills only work so well.

I was in Mexico one time, at an all inclusive resort and one night for dinner...EVERYTHING had cheese or milk in it. Well, stupidly, I gorged myself and I experienced what you wrote above and for the 1st time in my life, I wanted to call a Hotel Dr.

I made myself vomit though and felt a bit better. "

" I have to take pepto bismul when my stomach gets upset. Here recently though, I also have IBS. The pain in my stomach was getting so bad that the doctor actually had to put me on a prescription. The first one helped the pain go away, but it made me way too tired. I called and now Im on another one to try. I havent had to use it yet. I have used gas x. When Im bloated and have gas really bad, it seems like it dont work. I think it could be though cause its the chewables. IDK if its extra strength or not. Some doctors keep telling me to stay away from dairy and carbonated beverages. I cant though. Im picky enough. You just cant take dairy away from me. I also heard, this is proably for IBS, smoking isnt good either for it. Of course Im doing that also. I need to quit. "

" Ask a dr. for bental....it was a miracle for me! If i remember correctly it helps keep your colon and all that from spasming so it helps with the cramps and burning "

" Other than bental....the chewable multi symptom immodium helps me a lot...but I have to take double the recommended dose. That works just as well as the prescription for me personally. "

" 2 chewable Pepto-Bismo pills every 1/2 hr. completely cover mine for one cup of milk (I can tolerate about half a piece of dark chocolate without any symptoms) but if u have less tolerance 2 pepto bismols and some ginger tea with it should work just fine. "

" Milk of Magnesia!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have severe lactose symptoms..if i eat something that have a tiny bit of dairy ..i feel so bad..the instant blowting, gas, pain ..its horrible and they last about 8 hours..so i discover that as soon as i starting feeling this way..i take one tsp of milk of magnesia..and wow works like wonders..all my symptms STOP!
Of course if you are lactose intolerance you may want to avoid any dairy ..but if for some reason you may eat something (that you didnt know) with dairy..take milk of magnesia (LIQUID) the pills ..take forever to work.
I carry my milk of magnesia in my purse !!!! Thank you Phillips Milk of Magnesia "

" If you're like me, then your LI is only getting worse with the passage of time. Gorging on Lactaid pills can help but unfortunately, avoidance is the key (but that's kind of like saying saying abstinence is real solution to teenage pregnancy...). Here's a downer I've learned: Adding the slightest excess of alcohol to even a slight dairy binge will trigger what I can only imagine severe gastritis feels like. Gas-X and Ibuprofen help, but for the most part if you do the crime (pizza), you're going to do the time. Man I miss pizza... "
