Hi everybody,
I suddenly became lactose intolerant just after college - it was seriously like someone flipped a switch! Since then, I've had to cut out certain foods like ice cream, yogurt, large amounts of cheese, milk, etc, from my diet. It hasn't been fun, and though Lactaid has saved the day when it comes to milk for my cereal, I can't go buy a delicious Oreo cookie milkshake like I used to. I'm interested in how other people's lives, eating habits, etc, have been altered due to lactose intolerance. Full disclosure: I'm a journalism student and I would like to write a story for class on the topic, but I'm not sure where I can meet and talk to other people who have the condition, though about 1 out of 6 Americans have it to some degree. If anybody would like to share with the support group what they are going through, I think that'd be great. And if anyone would like to talk to me offline, so to speak (I understand that whatever is posted to the group is for the group only - no class projects!!), that would be fantastic as well. Thanks guys, I look forward to hearing your stories and sharing more of my own . . . like the time I had to politely decline ice cream birthday cake at a girlfriend's party, then felt silly and had some anyway! - Adam Posted on 11/17/08, 03:11 pm |

My Intolerance started all of a sudden at age 23. I would always have a bowel movement the morning after eating ice cream or frozen yogart for dessert. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) goes along with my intolerance. I noticed it with certain cheese and wasn't able to tolerate regular milk. Over the next few years I would have mornings where I was nauseous and would have to lay on the couch until I felt better. In the winter of 2005 I got real sick and everything I ate seemed as though it didn't settle. The GI I went to gave me the Lactose Intolerance test said that it was close to peaking. He said that it peaks around age 30 and slowly decreases after that. It will never completely go away. The general rule of thumb for people who are lactose intolerant is that anything over 1/2 a cup of milk isn't tolerated. It's been 2 yrs since mine peaked and I can say that it has gotten better. I have fat free Lactaid milk in my cereal and 1/2 the fat Edy's ice cream.

My intolerance started this year at age 52.
That should blow your minds. This has changed my life greatly. I used to drink fat free milk all day and ate nothing till night time cuz it satisfied me. NOW, it makes me vomit. Quite disgusting. I also learned, I am Glutin intolorant. If I drink too much Lactaid, I feel sick. I happen to like the taste of Lactaid better than milk. Many people who are lactose intolerant are also Casein intolerant. That is the protien in milk. I learned a lot of this on the Celiac discussion. I am new to all of this and am still learning.

Well, a few years ago, I thought I had a stomach ulcer, and anxiety problems. I thought I was crazy. I switched to the ulcer-diet, which included mostly milk and cheese (it's easy on the stomach, apparently) Which only made it worse... I didn't understand why, and didn't put it together until much later, because sometimes it would take hours to startt to feel bad... it felt like being nervous a lot of the time. Looking back, I think I developed lactose intolerance several years earlier, but just never connected the dots. it sucks... lactaid milk is amazing, though :)

I became lactose intolerant right around the time I started high school. Pretty much the worst time ever to develop an embarrassing condition :( I had to plan my social life around meals so I would avoid eating and having symptoms in public. My friends all make fun of me for always meeting up with them after meals, but at least its better then all the symptoms ruining my evenings. The one good thing that has come of all this is that all the dieting inspired me to keep very healthy and be fit. So it makes me laugh now that I'm a personal trainer who gets to train all the fatties that ate too much pizza ;)

I realized I was lactose intolerant when I realized my son was lactose intolerant and he started using Lactaid pills and it helped him. Then I started thinking back when I would eat dairy products and how I would feel after eating them, so I started using the lactaid pills and I really noticed a difference. Now I use Lactaid milk, Silk soy milk and lactose free oleo - Fleishmans.

I think I have been lactose intolerant since birth, as I was a VERY gassy child.
For me...once I realized why my bowels were always "irritated", I had to change my diet. I got used to using Soy milk in my cereal, and I fell in LOVE with "Silk" chocolate soy milk. Drinking it now in fact. I also changed my cooking, so that only one meal a day, MAYBE contains dairy. And I use dairy substitutes as much as possible.

Would be glad to share my experience...
I’ve been lactose intolerant since I was 13. Dating was real tough since I couldn’t eat anything with dairy either before or on the date (believe me, been there done that). I’ve been taking lactaid pretty much since my LI started, but something about actually taking the pill just didn’t stick with me, and I always suffered for it. A pill that needs to be constantly taken isn’t something my memory can handle (I can barely remember what I did this morning let alone a pill before every meal). My girlfriend at the time did some research after I spent her father’s business promotion party in the bathroom. She came across something called lactagen, which was a month or so long program that allowed me to be able to drink milk again like everyone else. I gave it a try not expecting any real change. I couldn’t have been more wrong. The results were phenomenal and taking the program was pretty easy and by the end of it I was so amazed to be able to eat quesadillas and be fine afterwards. No more pills for me again.
