I'm a single mother and I was caught over the weekend shoplifiting some nintendo ds games for my son who is doing really well in school, he just started pre-k. I've been stealling for a long time from just about everywhere I go but this time i was caught put in jail and released on 3000 bond my theft was over 500. and they added maliciouse distruction of property over 500 cause I took the security stickers off the packages. I really need to know if I'm looking at jail time or can i get house arrest, by the way I live in Maryland,I did seek a public defender but they won't see me until sept.29th any help will help.....Thank You

im not sure about the state law of maryland, but i know that $500 is a felony charge. usually a felony charge gets u jail time. unless u have a clean record and this is ur first time getting caught, they will most likely drop the charges down to a misdemeanor and end up with community service... i advice u seek help and go to therapy and get a diagnosis for kleptomania. that helped me some when it came time to face the judge. also if u actually work, they usually find a way around it so that they dont take a working citizen who pays taxes away from their job and put into jail. i hope this works out for u. i know it can get a bit nerve wracking waiting for ur court date.. but just do as much as u can for urself

If this is the first time you have been caught stealing,probably not. It wouldn't hurt your case any to talk to a Dr. about this and get diagnosed as a kleptomaniac.
