Medullary Sponge Kidneys and Stones...

Hi everyone,

I was diagnosed with Medullary Sponge Kidneys and Renal Tubular Acidosis last year. I've been having a lot of pain lately, in kidneys and throughout the ureters (as far I can tell), as well as white stringy things in my urine. I haven't passed any stones that I can see, but I have pain as if I had one (I know I DO have them in the kidneys). The last time I went in with pain and was convinced that I had a stone, or a UTI, I had no blood in th urine or infection.

My question is...does anyone else have MSK, and if so, does it cause you pain even when you aren't passing a stone?

I am going to see my doctor next month but this has been on my mind lately and I can't seem to reason my way through it. Part of the problem is getting pain medication (I've been relying on OTC numbing medication) and the other part is wondering if these cysts can pose problems later on.

Anyhow, thanks for any suggestions or advice on the topic.

" Hello MSK suffer.

I also suffer from MSK and from stones. I was diagnosed a few years ago. I would suggest that when you see you Nephrologist you ask for pain medication. I don't always use it but it has come in useful when I'm in sever pain or can not get comfortable. I also use heating pads.

I know for me I suffer from pain even when I'm not passing a stone. What happens is sometimes you are passing a small stone and don't know it. The other problem is your kidneys aren't processing or working as well as they should so there can be pressure or pain.

There are a few websites that have been helpful for me www.kidney.niddk.nih.gov
www.kidney.org
www.urologyhealth.org

Im not a professional. I have suffered from MSK and kidney stones for 8 years. I also work in a urology office. Never though my kidneys would bring me anything good but I was well networked from being there so often that it got me my first Medical Assisting job. ha ha ha When you see your nephrologist ask him questions. Write down your concerns before you go to the appointment and go over them with him/her.

I wish you the best and hope I was able to help a little. I'm here for you if you need me. :-) "

" Thanks so much. I need to make an appointment with my urologist soon...well, he's an internal med doctor who specializes in kidney stones....particularly studying urine and the causes for stones. The urologist turned me away saying my stones were too small for him to deal with. lol.

I'm glad to know that you can suffer from pain even when not passing a stone. I feel like a I have stones all the time!! lol "
