I was admitted to the hospital on June 14, 2009 with what I found out was a huge 9mm kidney stone. They admitted me due to not being able to regulate my pain. Upon meeting with the urologist the next morning, he told me I have several stones in my right kidney but only the big one has moved into my ureter and is stuck. He scheduled the insertion of a stent that afternoon and I was sent home Monday night. I've had nothing but pain ever since. I've been peeing blood since Tuesday. Severe pain in back and abdomen. Called doctor on Wednesday because the pain in my back was so severe when I peed that I thought the stone was moving again. He said it was due to bladder spasms on the stent and told me to go get some Azo Standard which seemed to help. I had an appointment with him on Thursday where he decided to culture my urine cuz he thinks there may be an infection now. Oh joy! Havne't heard anything from him on that though but he put me on another antibiotic and a more potent version of Azo via prescription.
My question is this: could the pain in my abdomen and constant kidney area pain in my back be due to an infection or is this par for the course for stents? I had a stent with my first kidney stone and I didn't have any issues with it other then it sliding down the evening before it was removed. I'm so miserable and tired of being in pain. I dread going potty but I still drink tons of water as to be a good girl. :) Is this normal??? My stone is due to be removed Thursday so I"m praying I'll be pain free by the end of the weekend. I've had stents three times after cystoscopies, and all three times I have been hospitalized on a Cipro drip. There is a very good chance that it is from an infection.
I remember having severe pain in my flank and my pelvis and having pain when I urinated. I was hurting so bad I thought I was dying. I'd recommend getting in touch with your doctor to get blood and urine work done. I don't see how they could operate on you with an infection, it would have to clear up before they operated on you. The pyridium should help. (I think that's the medication that you're on; works like AZO but your pee doesn't smell as harsh and it's still Easter egg dye orange.) If not, I think it may be an infection. Best wishes hun. I hope you feel better and good luck with your surgery!

They did a culture of my urine on Thursday when I went back in to see the urologist but he hasn't said anything about the results. He did put me on bactrim just in case cuz he suspected an infection. Its strange today though cuz I've been hurting at about a 6 out of 10 since last night on both sides which I don't understand since I only have stones in one kidney. Its so frustrating. I keep getting like hot flashes & night sweats which is another reason he's suspecting an infection.
If they don't operate Thursday because of this I'm gonna be so upset. I'm so tired of "Spike" and his little friends. I'd like to evict the little cusses as soon as possible.

It's odd that they haven't given you the results yet. I'd call tomorrow and ask for the results, even just for peace of mind.
It might be you're hurting on both sides because of pain radiating. Right now my pain is radiating from my left side to my right side right now. It makes it virtually impossible to get comfortable. Yeah, I remmeber those hot flashes. Not fun stuff! I know what you're going through hun, and I understand your frustration. Never any fun to go through. I'm sending some positive energy your way. I've been getting tired of drinking water lately. If it happens with you, I recommend Trader Joe's lemonade if you have one of them close by you. It's actually pretty good!

I'll have to call tomorrow. I always feel like I"m bugging them though when I call asking questions or if I feel funny and want to know if its normal ya know. I'll call and see what they say. He may figure that since I'm on the antibiotic that its all okay. Who knows.
The pain can radiate to both sides? Man, that sucks. Last night was awful. I couldn't get comfortable at all and the vicodin is useless. I've also had a migraine all day long which is making life oh so much more fun. I dread peeing, I feel like a fish I've drank so much water and I'm just tired of all of this. Oh isn't life a joy? And to think, I'll keep going through this for the rest of my life. Got to love family genetics. ARG! Thanks for the positive energy. It helps alot knowing others are familiar wiht what I'm going through and can give such positive feelings out. Thanks!!

I have several stones in both kidneys right now, all smaller than 3mm...and my back is killing me too. I feel like sometimes the kidneys just get really sore. As for the blood and pain with urination, I can't give any advice cuz I've never had a stent before. Though my friend has had several and she was miserable.
