lithotripsy

I need to have litho done for a 5-77mm stone in left ureter and a 2mm in same kidney.

My concerns are as follows:

1. I don't want this done under general anesthesia. I know that it also done under 'twilight sedation' and according to the ,Mayo Clinic, local anesthesia as well-http://www.mayoclinic.org/kidney-stones/treatment.html

the Urologist I went to uses general anesthesia. How do I find a Urologist that does litho using twilight sedation?

#2. I'm a single guy, living alone. When I get home from the procedure the same day,I'm scared I could have complications(intractable pain from stone passing ,if they aren't totally pulverized that is) It's gonna be difficult to arrange for someone to stay home with me after the procedure,is my point. What do you folks think? Is it mandatory to have someone stay home with you after the procedure?

#3. lastly, how many days ,post procedure, do I need to take off at work,to recuperate?

thanks in advance

" I have had lithotripsy several times and I dare not do it under twilight sedation!! I rather be under general anesthesia!! It is such a vigorous procedure that the nurse said she was standing outside the door and it sounds like they are beating you to death. So I rather not be awake for that. As far as after the surgery, I was in a little discomfort, sorta like a brusing on my back. You will definately have to have someone go with yout that day of course. I would say you will probably need someone to stay with you for a day or so, I was out of commision for about a week. But everyone is different. "

" I agree with ljstaff, everyone is different. First of all, I'm a woman who has had this done more times than I want to count and was always under general anesthesia...but, I was told it had something to do with having to stay perfectly still during the procedure or something like that? Personally, I didn't have any serious pain/problems after, but the hard part was having to pass the smaller stones once they've done the lithotripsy...and that's going to vary. "

" I had it done in twilight and it was great. That would be the route I would go. You really do not remember anything or even feel anything. I have numerous and before they did twilight they did epidurals on me to numb me from waist down. When you talk to the anesthesiologist discuss it with them, they are the ones to talk to.

I live alone also. I never had anyone stay with me. I made sure they were available by phone just in case. Only one time it was rough that the stones were moving around, but not as bad as I thought would be.

I just made sure I had it done on a Friday then I had the weekend to recupe. By Monday I was fine.

Good luck, keep us posted.

" Glad it is done and over. Were they able to get them all? Did you have any discomfort afterwards?

" How did your surgery go? I hope you did have the ansthesia. I had it done last year. It took about 2 hours because of the size of the stones. Did you recover well? The pain was bad for a few days for me, but I felt so much better after everything was over. I had been seeing a family dr. who had no idea what was wrong. I ended up in the hospital and had a urologist do x-rays. The surgery was nothing compared to the pain and infections I had been having. Thank goodness for specialists. "

" sheila-yeah they got all of the one obstructing stone in the lt ureter but there's a small 2 mm non obstructing stone in the lt kidney, the emergency dept. c.t. abd/pelvis demonstrated this. I hope 2 goodness it passes uneventfully and i don't have to have another litho done :(
wasn't any discomfort at all-the day surgery nurse, before the litho, told me after the litho i'd feel like i got kicked in the side, but i never did experience that! "
