Does anyone have a solution for preventing the formation of stones? I've had them for 8 years. I've gone through 3 different urologists, but so far none have found the solution. I've gone through 16 procedures to eliminate the stones (they are always too big to pass), but new stones always follow soon after. I'm a 30-something mom with 2 small children at home, and frankly I don't have the time or energy to spend on this. My latest lithotripsy (#12) was just on June 21st, and just yesterday the doctor said he thinks I have another 9mm stone in my kidney. There is also a possibility that there is another small one in my ureter. I'm already on urocit-k and magnesium, as recommended according to my last 24 hour collection. Anyone with ideas would be much appreciated.

Sounds like you have uric acid stones if they put you on that.
Google about kidney stones, a lot of things come up. Other than that, I have tried everything under the sun to keep mine from coming back. I forced myself to love water and it does no good. I keep getting them over and over and over and over. I have no quality of life most of the time!

Have you ever had your parathyroids checked? I also have chronic kidney stones. Finally I came across a doc who thought to check my parathyroids - they are located next to your thyriods and control you calcuim levels. Two of mine were bad and by the time the found them both of my kidneys were completely filled with stones. If you are still making stones while on the urocit K it's possible your parathyroids may be bad as well. Good luck to you, beieve me I feel your pain daily.

Wow sounds so familar just like my situation. I get uric acid stones all the time and they are usually 8-9mm stones i have had Lithotripsy once then was told i would have to have laser due to me having polycystic kidney disease so i had a 9mm stone sept.07 had laser surg. then in nov.07 ende up in ER had an 8mm stone again and tryed some medication called tricitrates oral solution to shrink it which took 6 months just to get it to 7mm and was in terrible pain and in ER again and urologist decided to take me to surgery and get it. Then had 24 hour urine and lab done last month and was told i needed to be on magnesiesum and to consume 4 oz of lemon juice diluted with water everyday. So guess we will see what happens. I have had 4 surgery for stones already and hate that they come right back i still have to repeat a 24 urine in 6 months Good Luck

Have you had any change in your diet?
The same kidney stones prevention methods apply to other types of kidney stone such as the Calcium Oxalate stones. To prevent these from happening again in the future you will need to cut down on the amount of oxalate rich foods that you are consuming and these include spinach, chocolate, beets and also rhubarb. This information was taken from the blog "Kidney Stone Remedy", which you can find at this link: http://www.hyperfatloss.com/weight...

You need to make sure you have a 24 hour urine test annually. What kind of stones do you have?
Not everyone needs a special diet. The medication is to stop new kidney stones from forming... what you are passing is stones that may have been formed before you were on medication. I recommend you go to this site and buy the Kidney Stone Handbook, http://www.kidneystonebook.net Also Dr. Leslie is the advisor on our Yahoo kidney stone board. He also has a web site http://www.drleslie.org He is one of the first urologists to try and treat kidney stoners and help them prevent more stones from forming. You can easily find the Kidney Stone Board on Yahoo. Dr. Leslie answers our ? and tries to help us. You might be able to get another opinion to see if your urologist is being aggressive enough in your treatment. I have a list of the top 15 kidney stone urologists and universities/medical schools/hospitals/treatment centers they are at. If you tell me what city or state you are in I might be able to help you and give you a referral. Dr. Leslie recommends going to the nearest medical school/teaching hospital with a urology residency program close to where you live. Also you can get a 2nd opinion from the Cleveland Clinic... an e opinion by filling out an internet form and sending records. They are #2 in the US for kidney stone treatment, I believe. This does cost $600.00 though. Also some nephrologists will work with stone disease patients. Normally they are concerned with putting people on dialysis and treat inoperable kidney disease. When you are not passing stones or having colic kidney stones are normally considered inoperable. This is a general rule though, and I was the exception to this from August 07 until Dec 08. I will always have kidney stones and have had them since 1965 when I was 13. Fortunately I do not have colic as often as a lot of people... although I am still a walking time bomb and could at any time. There is no way to predict much about kidney stones in the future unless you have recently had a problem and been treated. Sometimes a doctor will know if you will pass a stone in a few months or need surgery. Kidney stones move around and can sometimes hide behind other body parts so they do not show up in xrays. My problems as an adult have been years apart but I passed kidney stones every year from 1965 until 1970. Then I had open surgery in 1972, and 1983. By 1997 the 3 new procedures had been developed so I was able to have 2 ESWLs and 1 PCNL. Then in 07 I was told my kidneys needed to be "debulked" and that I had "difficult kidney stones". The latter means about 80 to 90% of the urologists can not help me surgically. I needed an expert. In 2007 and 2008 I had 3 utererscopies. I was supposed to have 1 to 3 more procedures on my right kidney in 08 but, th university is swamped with kidney transplants and prostate cancer patients mostly. Plus since it can not be guestimated how many stones can be removed from one procedure they lost interest in me. My procedures do not yield definative results. I did not have an acute blockage and was not passing kidney stones at the time. Most of my kidney stones are in the medulla or attached to the paranchyma which is a tissue layer in the kidney and can not be removed. Also my doctor, (Dr. G) retired in 08 and the last 2 had to be done by the doctor who took over for him, (Dr. D) who has roughly 20 years less experience. Dr. D does prostate cancer surgery and kidney transplants mostly. He is not a kidney stone expert. Dr. G mostly did kidney transplants and kidney stone procedures. If you want to ask me anything else, my email is mctripat@comcast. net. I also take Urocit K. My kidney disease is inherited so I was advised not to have children. After my Mom died 5 years ago, I have come to regret that decision... but now it is impossible. Trish
