Increased bowel movements - IBS or something else?

I posted a few days ago ago another forum about not being able to sleep because of needing a bowel movement. It's dawned on me that the not sleeping is just a symptom of the increased bowel movements which is the real issue.
I have been diagnosed with IBS for years BTW In the last few weeks my bowel movements have increased quite a lot to 3-5 BMs every other day, and mostly at night - they have also been looser on the most part. On those nights I may go as many as 5 times between 7pm and 4am and like tonight, the consistency has gone looser with each bowel movement, though never going as far as watery - they are still solid, just a lot looser. I have also been feeling a bit nauseas in the last few days, though only during the times that I have 'needed' the bowel movements. There has been blood a couple of times, though this has not really been on the stools themselves but more on the toilet paper and has been when I've had lots of bowel movements which I've felt hurting the anus entrance. Various trips to the docs have been fruitless and I've started to worry myself sick about other things like colon cancer. If these sounds familiar to anyone or you can shed any light from knowledge or hearing other people's experiences I'd be very appreciative of any input. Posted on 10/17/09, 09:10 pm |

bm at night is not normal symptom, even when i had diharrea ibs, i never woke up at night because of bms. if i were you i would go to a doctor asap and have run tests like endoscopies, upper and lower and an ultrasound or ct scan... maybe i'm too obsessed about doctors and scans you would say, but better be safe. my ibs is constipation predominant means if i eat fats i get immediately constipated...thanks to the doctors i know my problem i didn't diagnose myself... anyway then let us how everything went, wish you luck and that everything is ok...

Thanks for the reply, I think I'll go back to the docs tomorrow.
Just thinking, but first doc gave me Movicol and twice now after using it for a week I've started to get this increased bowel movement pattern I'm not sure I needed movicol as having BMs didn't seem to be a problem really - I wonder if this latest problem could be from using the movicol? Only thing is would it really be still affecting me 7 days later?

i used to be treated with movicol for severe constipation, and yes i used to go like 10 times a day i had loose bowel motion, and used to take 3 or 2 packets a day.... therefore i tried dufolac and fibre and it's great, i eat twice a day, breakfast and a normal meal and exercise 20 mins a day, and now i have only mild symptoms...if movicol is causing you many bms, try to talk with your doc first..in my case i had to change medicine.. good luck
