fish oil as a trigger for ibs?

I had been doing very well for a year or more, but within the last week or so, my ibs symptoms began to return. The only difference I can think of in my diet is that I am trying to take about 1000 units of Omega 3 and 6 a day from fish oil to lower cholesterol on my doctor's recommendation.
Has anyone had experience with fish oil as a possible trigger for ibs symptoms? I think I will stop the fish oil for a while and see what happens, but I don't want to do it if I don't have to. I'm flying coast-t0coast next week and don't need any problems! Posted on 10/16/09, 01:10 pm |

Have you tried switching from fishoil to flaxseed oil and/or UNcooked olive oil. These other 2 alternatives can help increase HDL (good cholesterol that you need for producing hormones maintaining 60% of brain made of fat).
Let us know if trying something else helps. Best Wishes EP

I have been adding two teaspoons of flaxseed oil to my breakfasts (European recipe called "creme budwig) for many years, but my cholesterol has still been rising every year. How much flax oil do you use?

I have never tried fish oil, but my father who is a Crohn's disease patient has a horrible time with it. He used to take fish oil and mineral oil all the time. His gastro said it can worsen symptoms because a residue begins to build in the colon which begins to affect the entire GI system. I know nothing about cholesterol, so I can't begin to help you there. There are places that sale omega 3 in different forms other than fish oil. Maybe you could talk to your doctor about one of those? If they aren't sold locally, your doctor can request that your pharmacy bring them in. Hope you find some answers :o).

If you research Omega 3/6 you can find that it is not unusual to be allergic to it. So fish oil and flax could cause nasty problems. I ended up itching all over really bad, stomach pains and it made my ibs-d bad. It took several weeks after stopping it and taking probiotocs to normalize my stomach.
So while it may not be a trigger, it could be an allergy that is making your ibs worse. Good luck.

It didn't occur to me that I may be allergic. After a month of Florastor, things seem normal again. I may try the fish oil again now and see what happens this time. Thanks for your suggestions.
