What triggers your IBS?

I was recently diagnosed with IBS after a bunch of tests came back normal. I'm curious what foods trigger your IBS and what foods help.

For me it's coffee, fried foods, coffee, and aspartame seem to give me problems. If I stay away from those, I can go weeks without painful symptoms.

Thanks for your input!

Heidi :-)

" I have just joined this group cause noticing that some foods that I eat give me a bloated tummy and the runs. I just had a bout of the runs and tummy aches and it's very frustrating.

Not sure if it was from the 1 cup of whole wheat cous cous and a sweet potato i had for dinner last night.

I was up this morning really early with stomach just growling like there was no tomorrow....:(

I was just wondering if IBS goes hand in hand with Fibro?
Any feedback or help would be appreciated greatly.

thanks for letting me share....I know now what other sufferers are experiencing and it's not comfortable at all. "

" Dear Patricia ~

Yes it can! Quite often.
My doc calls it a "syndrome" when the IBS and the Fibro..and even IC (Interstitial Cystitis) happen in the same body. Sometimes the meds for one can also help the other. So...my IBS substantially improved when I started taking Savella for my Fibro. Others have similar stories here.

So - I think our nerve endings are involved in the various parts of our system...so while the diet is a definite influence and factor in the flares....so is stress!

And it's all hard to define and pinpoint - so I am thankful for this place to compare notes ....and I learn something new every day from someone here! And it has taken time and persistence to also find some excellent doctors, don't give up.

Thanks - and blessings - and happy thankful season for those of us in the US. "

" Popeye's friend chicken, Indian Food (the spicy lentils, I think), salad with blue cheese dressing, hot dogs

What helps is something the doctor prescribed called Cholestyramine powder (Questran). I drink a cup before I go out to lunch or dinner. So far, so good

" Sister Kathy: thank you for your information as i haven't been put on any medications for this . I feel that my doctor isn't really treating my fibro properly and it's a hit and miss with me. :( I would surely like to know of it is the fibro that's irritating my bowels every once in a while.

Is there a test to find this out?

I have an IBS book and refer to it often when troubles arise. Although my tummy seems to have settled down after i took some immodium and had peppermint tea last night as well as crackers too. I have a list of when I am feeling ill days there's a list of foods to eat while being a diabetic also. "
