Advice:
upper right abdominal pain

I have a history of IBS for many years, but recently, actually after taking chantix, to stop smoking, I began having discomfort in upper right quadrant of abdomen. I never thought this was IBS as I usually experience lower abd pain and D*

Anyway, Abdomen is distended and hurts, spreads to my back. I have had Ultrasound, xrays, bloodwork and everything came back normal he said.

I ended up in ER last night as it hurt so badly and that doc again said its IBS and gave me an antispasmodic, Bentyl.

I am just curious, who has the abdominal swelling, in upper right quadrant similar to this?? What have you used to alleviate the pain and swelling?.

" I was starting to freak out about the right-sided abdominal swelling! I hope someone might still respond, even though this post is pretty old. :)

I am definitely more distended on my right than left, and I was sure I had a tumor! Abdominal ultrasound and liver enzymes all came back normal. I'm still paranoid I should get an ovarian cancer test, but the swelling is right under the rib cage, so it seems too high.

Tried Prilosec at doctor's suggestion, and that alleviated my pain, but that swelling is still there. I've been told I have IBS in the past. Any idea what that swelling is?? "

" well im no doctor but i have looked this thing up so much as i have suffered for 8 years now - Food enters the colon on the bottom right of your body near the appendix (thats why some of us get lower right pain) it then travels up to the upper right - there is s bend in the colon there so it goes straight across under your ribs and the feaces has to travel around that bend - sometimse if we have eaten somethin gbulky or gassy it will struggle to get round the bends - we aso have a bend on the left side of the upper abdomen when it bends to go straight back down the left side - down to the rectum and out of our bodies - hense why some of us get left hand pain.
I personally get more upper middle and left pain and bloating - when i went for my barium enema she had trouble getting the barium round the same corner and i had to be tipped and moved round to get it round the bend .

I have a book somewhere telling you that there are dif types of ibs according to where your pain in so i will grab it when i get back of the school run and post it up on here to show you !! If this pain and discomfort happens try peppermint tea(has to be hot and strong) and just sip it - and try rubbing your stomach in a clockwise motion as if to help the food through the colon alsoo heat pads are a wonderful invention xx jen "

" Going throught EXACTLY what you are. Finally had the scope today---an EGD, under general anesthesia. I also received am RX for Bentyl, took one and also got Prilosec---you guys sound as if those meds have helped you? I didn't know IBS caused pain??? I thought it was just alternative diarrhea and constipation---which i don't have. I'm right there with you currently=Lately my pain is in my upper right ribs that radiates to my back--I had ultrasounds and a CT scan--nothing, waiting for the biopsy.
Heating pads usually helps thius for me, maybe try that. "

" Have you ever had problems with your gall bladder? Sounds like a gall bladder attack. If you still have a gall bladder, I would ask them to check it with an ultrasound if this keeps up. "

" Heating pad, and warm tea decaffinated, will hopefully get the bowels to move. also make sure you are eating plenty of fruit.

Be Well. "

" Make sure to ask the Dr. about your gallbladder. My friend had the same symptoms in the same area and they kept saying the tests said it wasnt her gallbladder and she ended up getting her gallbladder out. Typical symptoms of a gallbladder attack is on the right side under the ribs that radiate to the right shoulder/back region. Do you ever get this after you eat a high fat meal? "
