Just wanted to pass on an article about soluble fibre and in particular psyllium, for relief of IBS. I've used it in the past and found it quite helpful. It's very similar to using Metamucil, and you can get it in healthfood stores fairly cheaply.

Also, I've been reading a book called Eating Alive which suggests that insoluble fibre (like bran) can do harm by aggravating the bowel, so that means that more than one source is suggesting laying off of the scratchy insoluble fibre.

If anyone knows of other good sources of soluble fibre that they have found useful, I'd be interested to know. I have been eating ground flaxseeds on my cereal in the morning on the advice of a Naturopath, and I wonder if that's soluble or insoluble.
