Elmiron

Okay, I have an issue. Recently my doctor and I discussed putting me on Elmiron, but I can't take it if I want to get pregnant. The pain has been worse lately, but I would willingly take the pain if I can have another baby.

However, we've been trying for three going on four years and my doctor thinks it's time I go on BC and take something ike Elmiron.

Should I do what my doctor says and give up hope or should I deal with the pain?

" I think first, you need to get you healthy and the pain under control. As for Elmiron, I took it for awhile, when I ran out, I quit taking it and didn't notice a difference in my pain levels. Are you on Amitryptaline? it coats the bladder and helps with pain so much. If it stops working, they can always increase the dose... just watch out for side effects. Don't give up hope on the baby though!!! It might be easier to conceive once you get everything under control. I had IC when I was pregnant with Kadence, not to scare you, but I had a horrible 8 months. She was 3 weeks early, and I had to have a c-section b/c I couldn't dilate. That's why I say get the pain under control, b/c it's possible you may have pregnancy complications as well. "

" They had to take me off Amitryptaline because of the side effects. Couldn't urinate. I'm worried about side effects w/ other Meds as well. I have a really hard time with medicines, and because of that theres not a lot they can do.

With me I think I deal with more physical pain when I'm not handling things well emotionally. I go to pain management and that seems to help. "

" Have you tried bladder instillations? I took Elmiron for about 8 months and then did 6 weeks of bladder instillations. I have been pain free and the frequency has stopped as well. I don't know if I've had more success because I've gone through menopause and don't have the hormone issues that younger women have but not dealing with pain and frequency has been a real blessing. "

" I would REALLY recommend also exploring some alternative therapies out there. I am pregnant, for example, and I can't take Elmiron as there are not any human studies done with Elmiron and pregnancy, and it is a fairly new drug -which means long term studies could take decades to come out. There is a wonderful website called evenbetternow.com that has lots of safe alternatives without the side effects of Elmiron. I have tried both and have found the natural remedies work faster (2 weeks compared to 3 months) and are MUCH safer and easier on my system. There is a wonderful homeopathic doctor on that site that you can email or call for free advice. He has WAY more knowledge than even my urologist! Even though most Western doctors have only one option, there are MANY options out there that they are not trained in. Do lots of research and you can overcome IC!! Good luck and good health! "
