I recently got diagnosed with ic and not sure how to get my life back. My flares started after partially tearing a tendon in my ankle while hiking. Its been an excruciating 7months of amost straight flare. Im on elmiron and following the diet so a lot fewer flares. Im still getting used to the changes and trying to avoid the stress that comes with figuring it all out, but it's getting to me. I feel as if i lost my freedom to eat, socialize and be active without pain and problems. My main hobby is backpacking, but I havent been on any trips lately, because I don't know how to accompany the diet or what to do about my energy depreciation. Are there any other active people? How do you cope?

I think most of us used to be active. I know not everyone backpacked of course. That is def not IC "friendly" they said that if you are overweight(not saying you are just giving a visual here) and you lose just 7 percent of your body weight, that it will improve your IC significantly. The pressure on your bladder is not good. Neither is carrying heavy things and doing activities that "bounce" you up and down like jumping, running, walking with a big bag on your back. Some people with IC might be able to do this because everyone is SO different. But if you don't feel you can, then you have to respect what your body is telling you. Ya know? I know this is horrible. This is what having a chronic disease is all about. It steals your life to an extent. People in our society do everything over food that we cannot eat. Business deals are done in restaurants and we'd be sitting there sipping water or in pain for lord knows how long for cheating on the diet. We can't be as active because we hurt, we have to void all the time, the pressure to go is always there...there isn't a whole lot we can do about it other than try to get better with the treatments we need. And take it in baby steps ya know. Like just go on walks for certain amounts of time and build up to it. Do regular hiking instead of back packing. Just step it up each time. And there might come a day when you can go and be almost like you were before! Just keep the hope but also be realistic because no one knows how you feel or what your body can handle but you. I know this sucks. It stole my life too and my son a mother because I never know when I'll get sick from this and when I am sick he misses out. It is not fair but it is the life we have now. Stay strong and don't give up trying.
