I've had IC for a long time now,I've always used benadryl for my food allergies and always seemed to help my bladder symptoms back then till it stopped working.I've tried Atarax my doctor said it is a stronger anti-histamine it was somewhat helpful but I couldn't take it during the day bc I couldn't function i tried pyriduim I'm allergic to it, i tried Elmiron I had a very bad allergic reaction to it,I'm allergic to Prosed Ds too.I was put on hydrocodone it was helping but after four days I became sensitive to it.Recently,I was put on Valium and it really helps for the bladder spasms but I'm looking for something that it's not addictive .I've never tried Elavil I've read some people are taking it Can u take it during the day?

" My husband is allergic to Elmiron so I had to stop taking it also. I was so happy when my urologist prescribed Elavil, also known as Amitriptyline. It helps me sleep great at night. I'm now taking 50 MG and within an hour, I feel very drowsy and pass out. Some people may be able to take Elavil during the day, as long as it's a low dosage, like 10MG but it always makes me super drowsy so I can't. Elavil is not addictive and all of the urologists that I've seen recommend it because it works very well. It's worth a shot. Good luck to you.

" Hi there,

During the day, I take Cyclobenzaprine 5 MG tabs (also known as muscle relaxers) which help to relax my pelvic muscles and makes me a little drowsy and for extreme pain I take Hydrocodone (Vicadin) 7.5MG tabs. I will be getting a round of the DMSO installs soon so that will also help with pain during the day. I have pain everyday but these meds really help to reduce the it. :)

" Hi there - I take Elavil at night and it lasts the full 24 hrs. It takes a few weeks to get really used to the drowsy effects, but you can get used to it. Just allow yourself enough time to sleep the night before, and take it at least an hour before you actually go to bed. It has worked wonders for me. Good luck! "

" I've been taking elavil since 1994. We've had to up the dosage over the years. I started at 25 mg's at bedtime and I'm up to 100 mg's at bedtime. It definately helps me sleep. I don't know of anyone who takes it during the day. Even when I was taking 25 mg's there's no way I could take it during the day. Not only does it help me sleep, I believe it helps my IC symptoms some. I also have fibromyalgia and it helps my fibro symptoms as well.
Good luck to you and let us know how you're doing.

" I took Elavil for a while. It helped quite a bit with symptoms, my symptoms have gotten worse since I stopped, but when I was taking it, i was ALWAYS tired. I only took it at night before bed, but I felt like I was never had a enough rest. I'm thinking about trying it again though. "
