.5 mg once a day is a pretty low dose of Xanax. If you feel comfortable enough, try sleeping without it. If you feel you need it later on in the night (like if you awaken later on or find after an hour or two that you're not asleep yet) you can always take it then. Another option is to try taking half (cut it in half) which would be .25mg. Most Drs or pharmacists would recommend a gradual reduction....so like .25 for like 3 three days then 0mg from that point on.

Hi,
I agree with Erica, you can just stop taking it. Your on such a very low dose, nothing will happpen as far as withdrawls. I find it nuts that out of all the meds that a doc could give you for insomnia he would even give you Xanax! There are just so many others out there, and not addictive as much as Xanax can be to so many. Debbbie
