I take .5 mg Xanax for insomnia. Lately I have been falling asleep before I even take it. My doctor is on vacation & my pharmacist won't tell me how to stop taking it. Does anybody know how to get off Xanax?

" .5 mg once a day is a pretty low dose of Xanax. If you feel comfortable enough, try sleeping without it. If you feel you need it later on in the night (like if you awaken later on or find after an hour or two that you're not asleep yet) you can always take it then. Another option is to try taking half (cut it in half) which would be .25mg. Most Drs or pharmacists would recommend a gradual reduction....so like .25 for like 3 three days then 0mg from that point on.

I hope this helps and wish you many restful nights ahead!

Blessings,
~Brook "

" I have a long history of benzo Rx s: xanax, valium, lorazapam, temazapam, clonazapam. You are on a low dose and can just quit if you feel ok with that. Otherwise, you can try splitting them in half and tapering, but really, you should be fine simply discontinuing use.
Good luck!

" Hi,
I agree with Erica, you can just stop taking it. Your on such a very low dose, nothing will happpen as far as withdrawls.
I find it nuts that out of all the meds that a doc could give you for insomnia he would even give you Xanax!
There are just so many others out there, and not addictive as much as Xanax can be to so many.
