suggestions for breast feeding mother

Greetings, I just joined this group. I have been struggling with insomnia on and off since college (many years ago now). I am going through a really bad period now. I am having trouble both getting to sleep and with middle of the night wakenings where I cannot get back to sleep. I am breast feeding my daughter (who is finally sleeping well through the night), but now I cannot sleep. I cannot take drugs, because of the breast feeding and other remedies have failed me (hot tea, baths, etc). Does anyone have any suggestions? I am dying without sleep. It is hard to take care of a baby girl without sleep.

" I would suggest CBT=cognitive behavior therapy. Here is a link to an online article http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/i... and a websit which has great info...but it's like $25--cbtforinsomnia.com.

Have you talked with your dr (ob/gyn) about the condition? They might know what is safe to take during breatfeeding. I am wonding about Hyland's Calm Forte (you might know the Hyland's company from their AWESOME baby teething tablets). It's a "natural" remedy. I know there are "herbal" remedies...melatonin, valerian root, etc but I don't know how safe they are when breastfeeding. I have a friend who also developed insomnia right after her baby began sleeping through the night and as it turns out a lot of her insomnia is attributed to anxiety and possibly depression. Have you ever considered that?

Hope this helps. Hang in there.

~Brook "
