Drinking alcohol for insomnia

For years I've medicated myself with alcohol before my sleep time (shift worker). In 2 weeks time I'm going through a detox program for alcohol withdrawal. I'm ok with that but I'm concerned with underlying insomnia issues. Any comments and personal experiences are welcome.

Thanks in advance, desertgal1

" I have chronic insomina, I don't drink but I've heard many times drinking disrupts a good nights sleep. (I mean a full night) even though it might put you to sleep in the begining. I hope that you see a positive difference after your detox program. Best of Luck! "

" An old friend of mine uses alcohol to sleep.
He doesnt feel like his doctor is treating his sleeping problems.
He has being like this for years, getting worse everyday. But he's a really nice guy who has never raised his voice once. "

" This a a bigtime problem because now you face rebound insomnia as well. I did this for years as well...... Not only does it make sleep worse in the long run but ends up messing up your liver, etc. "

" Sorry as I quess I didn't address the question about underlying insomnia but really don't know where to start as there are so many potential causes for insomnia. Start with a physical and mention the insomnia as some medical issues such as diabetes can cause insomnia. After this turn to your local nutrition center or health food store for natural remedies. Finally, education, education, and education. The more you know about insomnia the more likely you will find a cure. Relaxation, hynosis, aromatherapy, accupuncture, etc. have worked for some. "
