I had open mesh inguinal hernia sugery on my left side last year 11-29-07. My Dr. told me to wait a year, but as I talk to other people who had hernias, they say my Dr. is very conservative. I'd like to start doing bodyweight workouts(pushups, pullups, chinups, dips)I'd also like to start some resistance work with those Superbands(giant rubberbands)I'm not interested in lifting weights in fear that I might hurt myself again. Any help, advice, or person experiences would be greatly appreciated!

welcome buddy.i would like to put my 2 cents in on two of the three questions you are looking for.under advice----i would say start everything very slowly.i am comming up on 6 months since surgery and as far as lifting i feel pretty good. on my job i move some heavy boxes, tables and school equipment, and i would almost try anything that i did before the hernia.i would feel the bodyweight workouts should be able to be done.. i also do some jogging and running but no bodyweight workouts like you are looking to do...it does seem your doc is on the conservative side.my doc suggested the 6 month period for just about returning to all normal activities. he talked about baseball, basketball and all exercises...these are my personal thoughts,im no doctor,i'm a janitor who went through the whole procedure..good luck..........start off slow and you should be ok.........phil

i have had two inguinal hernias repaired. the last one was about 2 months ago. i am a bodybuilder who makes most of my living with my physique, so the question of when can i get back into the gym was/is of paramount importance to me. here is my experience:
the doctor tells me to wait 4 weeks to pick up more than 15 pounds, then to take time and get back into lifting slowly. she said it is important to let the mesh seat in well down in your abdomen, so exercises that create a lot of intrabominal pressure are definately out for a few months at least (squating, deadlifting, even leg presses). i was good and stayed out of the gym for the first four weeks after surgery. week 5 i went to the gym and used only machines to do some upper body workouts. week 6 i got back into some freeweights with my upper body. week 7 same deal. now around week 8 or 9, i actually did some bent over rows yesterday which do create intra abdominal pressure, they went ok. i did some light leg pressing a few days ago, that went ok. i use pain as my guide, if i start to feel my surgery site, pressure or pain, i try and stop. of course i stupidly spotted a freind who was doing 405 deep squats yesterday, and that actually hurt my lower back rather than my hernia. so over all if it has been a few months since your surgery, i think you are ok to start lifting some, just pay attention to how you are feeling.
