I just got diagnosed with PCOS. My lab work didn't show that I had it, but my ultrasound did. The dr. prescibed me Metformin. I am to start out with 500 mg a day for a week then 1000 mg a day for 3 months. Has anyone had success stories with Metformin?

" My doctor gave me metformin to take! I took it for a year and it did nothing but help me lose weight and become reg. Then he added Clomid to make me ovulate. After just one round of that I became pregnant. My cousin is taking the Metformin now and just found out after 6 months of using that she is pregnant. So I think that it would depend on the person. But I do hope that it works for you! "

" Hey Bsaustin, I also have PCOS and on Metformin (about a year now) the only success I have had with it is that my periods now come like clock work every 32days and around the same time of day also. Before my cycle was any where from 35-45 days! The only side effect I had was diahrea (TMI sorry) it was bad for the first week or two then went away. So yes it will help you regulate if you have any other questions feel free to ask! "

" How is the metformin working for you? This our first step. If this does not help our next step is clomid. Any advise would be great "

" so far that metformin has not done a whole lot. I have only been on it for about 3 weeks though. For the first 2 weeks iI did have diarrhea but now that is gone unless I eat too much and then it comes back for about an hour or so. Yesterday I began to spot a little so I don't know if that means I am about to get my period or not. I have not had a cycle since March 31st and that was induced by prometrium. I hope the spotting means the metformin is working! "

" I was told by my dr. that I would probably notice weight loss. So far, only 3 weeks in but I have lost a couple of pounds. It's hard to tell if it's from the medicine or not though because I have also started going to the gym regularly. I have found that I am not as hungry as I used to be. Alot of time at meals I eat because I know I need to but not because I'm hungry. "

" I've been on Metformin for the last 4 years, and at first I dropped about 20 lbs in the first 6 months, and after the first 3 months, my periods started regulating, I didn't get my period for the first 2 months that I was on it. As far as the stomach upset goes, I'm still having that symptom 4 years later, so I doubt it'll go away. I also have a problem with the pills sticking in my throat on the way down, but I'm on a really weird dose, 850mg twice a day (I only take it once b/c of the side effects, and it's still working). Hope that helps some. "

" This post has been very helpful. My doctor is putting my on Metformin once my period starts. I am nervous about the side effects. He is starting me out on 1000mg, this seems high from what I am reading. Has anyone else started out on a dose this high?

He wants me to take Metformin for 1 to 2 months then he is going to add Clomid back in with the Metformin. Clomid alone has not helped me, I have been on it for 3 months. "
