I have a Few Questions....

First of all, I knwo that we need to have my hubby's sperm checked before we continue much further with TTC, but he's the problem...
I have medical insurance for just me. He is not on our insurance, nor does he have his own through his company, as they do not offer it. And it would be so expensive for him to be on mine with me, that there wouldn't be a reason for me to work. SO, I am wondering if anyone knows on average what the cost of having his sperm count checked, WITHOUT insurance? Next question... I am going to the DR on the 22 or 23 day of my cycle to have a blood test. She said this is to check and see if I ovulated.... Anyone have this done before? I am just wondering what to expect... Also, ovulation kits... Never really used one, but should I? Since I should be having a normal period soon, and will then be taking clomid... Any advice would be nice, because I am new to this, and I don't know very much... P.s. I don't really know what all the abbreviations mean, except for TTC, lol, so dummy it down for me! Hi my dear,
I am a Canadian Resident so, I can't help you on the cost for the sperm test. As for the Day 22 blood work test, I used to get my blood test levels measured at Day 21 Day 28 and Day 35 (if no period but, my cycle is Day 32). So, that being said, they do this to measure the progesterone rise that occurs with ovulation and then stops with menses. Your physician probably wants to compare the levels on your own, without the medication and then after with the medication, to make sure it is working. You don't have to fast but, you have to make sure you go on the specific days they tell you to.

Hi there
I cant help with the cost of sperm test because am in a completely different continent and quite frankly I don't know cos our medical cover sorted that out. I hope you can manage to get it done though cos it is important. I did do tons of those ovulation tests though and they are pretty standard. They just do a blood test and the levels of hormones (I guess) indicates whether you've ovulated or not. This is important as you would rather know than move into the next stage without having ovulated. I did use the ovulation test kit twice. The one's I used is like a HPT (home pregnany test) where you POAS (pee on a stick). The colour change then tells you if you're ovulating or not so you can start with the BD (baby dance). What I do know is that apparently we ovulate anywhere between 10-21 days in our cycle. So I would suggest that you get into a nice BD routine for those days. But not everyday as you need to give your DH's (dear husband's) boys a chance to build up again. Maybe every other day. I also know that its good if DH can wear boxers and takes a good Zinc supplement. A Ginseng supplement is also good for men. My DH also took a Selenium supplement but you should check with your doc if thats ok. Oh, also you try and get your DH to regularly bathe his ummm... bits....in cold water. Hope this helps. Good luck

I believe our EOB said that hubbies was $175.
I would ask the doctor if they have a reduced rate for cash payments.

Our semen analysis was 175 dollars. You can call the lab that your RE recommends and ask them how much it is for someone who is a cash patient. Keep in mind that if you end up doing inseminations at some point...you will need to pay this fee for every insemination. HOpe that helps.

The blood test on the 22nd or 23rd day is a very quick poke. Your doctor will probably know within 24 hours what the results are. My doctor doesn't call me unless there is an issue so you may want to check if you are anxious for results. They are checking hormone levels to see if you ovulated. Nothing scary.
Regarding Clomid, I have taken it 6 times. It made my ovaries feel like basketballs, I had terrible hot flashes and was more emotional than usual. Some people take it at night so they sleep through the side effects. Good luck!

At our lab the semen analysis runs about $90. (It's $150 if they also do a sperm antibody test.) The thing that I would caution you about before you put him on your insurance would be whether or not they will even cover it. Unless your insurance plan has infertility coverage -- they probably will only pay for one "diagnostic" analysis -- and no additional ones. Therefore, it would probably be cheaper and simpler to just pay cash for it! But, it just depends on your individual plan.

My doc's office charges $90 for a semen anaylis. So not terrible. Acutally the cheapest out of any fertility test. As for blood test on day 22 or 23 of your cycle is probably progesterone, and that is simply getting your blood drawn. At least that was my case. Ovulation kits I would recommend checking out ebay as they are kind of expensive.
