Paperwork annoyance

Curious to know if anyone else has encountered this, or if they can speculate why this is like this:

So, we went for our injection training on Wednesday. We had to bring in all the legalese paperwork to sign and date, etc. One page asks us to choose what option we want for leftover embryos (if any) when we're done with the process/done having children. The three choices were basically 1.) destroy them, 2.) donate them to the medical college to use to study how embryos grow, then they'll be destroyed, or 3.) have resident embryologists use them to practice with and perfect the IVF process...then destroy them. No option was given to donate them! I was like "Wait, so...my choices are basically destroy them sooner or destroy them later?" I mentioned this to the nurse and she said we could "write in" our wishes and initial those. It just seemed odd, and more than a little disturbing, to me that this wasn't an option up front. Is embryo adoption really rare or complicated or something? Why wouldn't they suggest it?

" I haven't been in that situation, but that would really bother me too! Why isn't the average person able to just choose to donate their extra embies to those in need? Hm...curious to see what others have to say! "

" I am going in to do my IVF paperwork this Tuesday. We have the option to donate, but it had a lot of catches to it. You have to coordinate it through a different company, they will not guarantee to except the extra embies, and if they do you will most likely have to pay a fee to donate them. There was not anymore information other than that so I will be asking my doctor more about it on Tuesday. Good luck with your IVF. When do you start? "

" I was supposed to start injections yesterday, but we're doing another cycle of BCPs before we start, to have more time to complete the paperwork and get the money together (it's all due up front - urk!) "

" And, Mally, I figured it would be complicated, but I was surprised it wasn't even mentioned. I had to bring it up. :( "

" Yeah, that is strange they didn't even mention that as an option. I completely understand about the money up front part. My office is the same way and my insurance covers pretty much nothing. I just started my BCP's on Monday and will most likely start my injections November 4th. Sounds like we might be going through IVF around the same time. "
