Interaction of Arginine With Prescription Drugs

Recently I exchanged E Mail messages with a guy who is a weight lifter and also has ED due to a colon operation. He said he uses arginine to help him lift weights. And he said he uses NOS Pump by Body Fortress which is sold in Wal-Mart. I checked at Wal-Mart today and found it. A box costs about $10. You can take two or three capsules for two or three grams of arginine.
The weight lifter said he quit taking the ED prescription drug Cialis because the arginine was working without the side effects of Cialis. He uses NOS Pump at a dose of apparently three grams a day. But if you are taking any prescription drugs ask your doctor about possible interactions of the drug with arginine. Here is something I found on the Internet about some prescription drug interactions with arginine. The claim is made here that arginine, when combined with high blood pressure prescription drugs, can reduce your blood pressure too much. This seems to imply that arginine can reduce blood pressure. Thats interestring, if true. "At http://erectile-dysfunction.emedtv...\ tml they say "Even though it is a dietary supplement (not a "drug"), L-arginine can potentially interact with a few medicines. Some of the medicines that may lead to L-arginine drug interactions include: * Blood pressure medications * Certain erectile dysfunction medications, including: o Sildenafil (Viagra®) o Tadalafil (Cialis®) o Vardenafil (Levitra®) * Nitrates, such as: o Isosorbide dinitrate (Dilatrate® SR, Isochron™, Isordil®) o Isosorbide mononitrate (Imdur®, Ismo®, Monoket®) o Nitroglycerin tablets or capsules (Nitroquick®, Nitrostat®, Nitro-Time®) o Nitroglycerin ointment (Nitro-Bid®) o Nitroglycerin patches (Minitran®, Nitrodisc®, Nitro-Dur®, Transderm-Nitro®, Transderm-NTG®) o Nitroglycerin spray (Nitrolingual®). Blood Pressure Medications Combining L-arginine with a high blood pressure medication may lower your blood pressure too much, possibly causing dizziness, lightheadedness, or other problems. If you take blood pressure medicine, check with your healthcare provider before taking L-arginine, as your blood pressure may need to be monitored more closely. Erectile Dysfunction Medications Theoretically, combining L-arginine with some erectile dysfunction (impotence) medications could cause dangerously low blood pressure. Do not combine L-arginine with these medications without your healthcare provider's approval and supervision. Nitrates Theoretically, combining L-arginine with nitrate medications could cause dangerously low blood pressure. Do not combine L-arginine with these medications without your healthcare provider's approval and supervision." There is some info on the side effects of arginine in capsule form on - and on possible interactions with some prescription drugs: http://www.enotalone.com/article/9... "Tablets/capsules: There are no standard or well-established doses of arginine, and many different doses have been used and studied. A dose that has been studied for treating coronary artery disease is two to three grams taken by mouth three times daily for three to six months. A studied dose for heart failure is 5.6 to 12.6 grams taken by mouth every day, divided into two or three equal doses, taken for six weeks. For erectile dysfunction, 1.6 grams taken by mouth three times daily for six weeks has been studied. For low sperm count, four grams daily for three months has been used." On http://www.synergy4life.com/proarg... they say " L-arginine is NOT for use by pregnant or lactating women, males with prostate disorders or high PSA values. L-arginine should not be used by diabetics or borderline diabetics unless under close medical supervision because growth hormones can sometimes block the effects of insulin. L-arginine may be beneficial to some persons with Type II diabetes or sub-diabetic insulin resistance: Physicians and clinicians may request the "L-Arginine/Diabetes Report". Persons under the age of 23 and/or persons who have not completed their long-bone growth phase should NOT take L-arginine." Arginine has also been used by women. "Higher blood flow makes clitoral and vaginal tissues more sensitive and responsive to sexual stimulation and helps increase the possibility of reaching orgasm. Although there haven't been nearly as many studies done on arginine supplementation in women as in men, one study found that postmenopausal women who took a supplement including L-Arginine experienced heightened sexual response.3 Another study involving 77 women of all ages found that after four weeks, 73.5% of the women who took a supplement including L-Arginine experienced greater sexual satisfaction, including heightened desire and clitoral sensation, frequency of intercourse and orgasm, and less vaginal dryness.4" # 3 Meston CM, Worcel M.
