I agree. English wouldnt even be the primary language if one would be even picked. It would have been German. Whats the point of allowing other people to migrate from other countries to here and forcing them to forget their cultures and language just to replace it with another? It's supposably not what our country is about yet that's what we're doing. Yes they should learn to speak english, but that doesnt mean they should have to give up what makes up their whole being just so they can have a better life.

If you are going to live in America, you should know English. That is the chosen language. Not saying that it is right or wrong, just that it is. There are many places that offer things written in other languages, and that is good for them to do. But it is their choice. It shouldn't be the law that everyone has to put things into every language. That wouldn't be the American way. When you visit other countries, they don't offer things in English and if they do it is by their choice. If you go to live in another country legally, then you need to learn their culture and language or you won't survive. It should be the same here. If you are coming to live in America, then you need to learn the ways of our Nation. We are not expecting you to unlearn the ways of your home land, only that you learn to live in your country of choice. It is not possible for the country to function if there are so many different ways of speaking. No one would be able to communicate and it would be impossible to learn the many different languages for people that come to America. There has to be a standard, and I feel that America does a good job of trying to educate the immigrants that come here in the ways and language of the US. There aren't very many countries, if any, that have you press a certain number on the phone to hear the message in your language. But we do that here, and I don't think that is right. If you are coming to live in the US, you need to become American. Not lose the ways of your homeland, but you need to know the ways of America.

As far as the land of the free, we don't require any fee for moving to America or shoot you on site if you aren't legal. It is free to come to America, but you need to be legal. It isn't fair for the Americans to be paying taxes, and having non citizens getting free government support. If you are working in America illegally, then you aren't even paying taxes to the US and a lot of the money earned goes back to the people that live in the country you came from, so it doesn't even help the US economy. There are so many Americans looking for work, but the work is going to non citizens, and the US economy keeps getting worse. Granted the government has a ways to go to get their spending under control and I could say a lot about that, but that isn't the issue here. We need American to be working, so the taxes get paid and we don't get further into debt.

I have no problem with people coming to live in America. I only have a problem with them living here illegally.

I honestly believe there should be a law passed that if you are in
public either restaurants work anywhere in public you should speak ENGLISH.and it should be a law if their hear on visa's they need to learn.........

In other words-When in AMERICA speak ENGLISH-IF YOU CAN'T, LEARN TO SPEAK IT!

If you want the privileges this great nation has to offer then assimilate to the language and customes here-that doesn't mean you for get where you came from, but your aligence should be to your new country of choice.

Come here legally-it's a slap in the face to the millions of immigrant's who have gone through the process legally. Is it to much to ask to follow the rules of law brought forth this great land.

English is the language of the USA and should be spoken everywhere. I do not think illegals should receive amnesty. Doris104, you are right. When you travel to other countries, you need to have some understanding of the language of that country. They don't all speak English. I, like some of the rest of you, have no problem with immigrants who come here legally but they do need to learn our language.

It's not that any one is making up the language rules there is not a specific language for the u.s. it just happens to be that advertisement makes it that way the people that live here make it that way. Obviously there are a lot of latinos who live here so spanish is always going to be spoken and english has been in this country now since the brittish imigrated here so the people that are mainly controlling this are the advertising agencies because there just looking for people who are going to buy.

@PhillyAA do you understand though that are brains weren't exactly made to learn languages after a certain age. Have you tryed to learn any other language recently don't you think it was a little tough?

@Doris104 there are no laws that say that you should be billingual or trillingual and so on. And in order to live in america you do need to pay a lot for your visa you need to pay a fee. And the economy runs on immigrants that dont even get payed minimum wage think about it who does the dirty work? immigrants do. Why do we have the stereotypical jokes of who mows your lawn because its true immigrants do it. As far as taxes some non citizens and non residents do pay taxes. The economy is messed up because of the war expenses and it happens everytime after war.


@ everyone languages go through evolution to someday english will be dead like latin. The original language of the u.s. was the language of the native americans. Things are not going to stay the same ever. Languages will die and populations will change.

These people who talk about being in another country and having to speak their language obviously have not traveled. I've been to many countries in Europe and Africa and everyone I met in Europe spoke English and some people in Africa spoke English, and those that did not spoke Spanish or French so I was able to talk to everyone. Because America does not have an official language, there should be accommodations made for everyone. There are laws preventing discrimination based on country of origin, and people from countries where English is not taught should not be held back because they have not learned. Also, if you are going to talk about the rules of America (Doris 104) you should not compare it to other countries. You can't have it both ways.

lala... you constantly run all over this topic denouncing anyone and everyone who has an opinion different from yours. Geesh girl, don't you have school to go to or something? You continually call out people who make great points about this issue. I guess I'm at a loss as to why this bothers you so much. These forums are simply a tool in which we can express ourselves. Hooray for you in doing so, but leave personalities and others' opinions out of it.
