Hi, I'm going into hospital just after christmas for a total abdominal hysterectomy due to fibroids, I am after some advice of what to take into hospital with me also would I be better to take nighties or pyjamas and how many packs of pads should I take also what absorbancy should they be. I would be very grateful for any advice for both the hospital stay and afterwards at home. Thanks

I had a hysterctomy many years ago and the ripe old age of 35. I found that nighties worked best for me. As far as pads, the hospital supplied them. When you get home you will still have some sorenes. So just take it easy and give yourself a chance to heal. I didn't have much of a problem. it just took some time to heal the stomach muscles. You will do fine. I felt great afterwards not haviing to worry about all the junk I had to deal with before the surgery. If you just want to talk or if I can be of any help just e-mail me.
Hugs, Dolores

Thanks for the advice, i know i need to supply my own pads as the hospital has told me just wasn't sure how much bleeding to expect. I am looking forward to having it done, not the pain obviously but i feel like i am going to get control of my life back. I like to have things ready in plenty of time even if i'm packing for a holiday the cases will be sat there of a week or two before i go, so although i still have about 6 weeks before my op i want everything ready and will worry until it is, hence nighties or pj's question. I will be packed soon and then can get on with christmas :)

Nighties...You are NOT going to want anything touching your abdomen. Don't forget your robe for when you have to walk the hallways. Also, carry slippers. You won't be able to reach your feet to put on any type of non-slip on shoes. At home I found house dresses to be best. Six weeks later I am just now able to wear my stretch pants. I still cannot wear my jeans. My abdomen is still somewhat tender to touch.
You should not be needing pads. I bought a pack of 28 super absorbency(the type I usually used). I bled lightly for 2 days then spotted for 2 weeks. You MAY bleed but you are NOT expected to bleed. I got by with 1 pad per day, the first 2 days(used for as security measure) and then went to pantyliners. I now have a pack of pads for sale:-) Btw, buy yourself a reacher for picking up little things when you are back at home. If your fibroids caused you pain, you will REJOICE when the date comes that your period WOULD be due next. One last side note...,mentally prepare for menopause. My symptoms kicked in by day 3. It's been 'fun' ever since. All the best and I will keep you in prayers if you tell me an exact surgery date.
