Hi Ladies,
I am scheduled for a total abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy next week. My uterus is full of multiple masses which appear to be, abnormally thickened endometrium, ovarian cysts, uterine polyps, intramural fibroids, sub-mucosal fibroids, sub-serosal fibroids, pedunculated sub-serosal fibroids, nabothian cysts, adenomyosis and at least two unknown. My uterus upon internal examination is larger that what is seen on pelvis us and the uterus is minimally moveable.I had the uterine biopsy which was negative but surgery is being recommended because of severe pelvic pain and pain in my right flank which is speculated that it is one of the pedunculated fibroids pressing on my ureter. I have had multiple abdominal surgeries and with the unknown cancer risk, I am having surgery done by a gyn-oncologist. My grandmother had endometrial cancer. With all that said, I started to psychologically prepare for surgery then I failed one of my pre-op tests. That unknown left me for 5 days thinking that I was going to have to cancel surgery. I finally got the go ahead that surgery is a go. Now the butterflies are coming back. Question...(1) Did anyone opt not to take the hrt after surgery and (2) What did you find beneficial for menopausal symptoms if you did not take it. I am great friends with pain so I am not concerned about pain or the recovery period, I am truly only concerned about going "insane" while going through menopause:-( My surgeon said it was my decision if I wanted to take out the ovaries but I am high risk and the odds of going in successfully to remove the ovaries later on down the line if something pops up, is not very favorable. With that I am taking them out but afraid of waking up the day after "bitching" like a mad woman. Help! I have a marriage to preserve. How bad are your menopausal symptoms and Posted on 09/29/09, 05:09 pm |

hi! I had my surgery 2 years ago that put me on a sudden menopause. When my OB told me that everything will be remove I know that I'm going to menopause by then.My doctor told me to take HRT to avoid symptoms.I was put on premarin .0625 mg. and took It for just 3 months and told my doctor to stop it because of its risk of breast cancer. As expected symptoms appears like hot flushes, dryness of skin, night sweat, especially backpain where I undergo therapy for almost a month I'm at risk of osteoporosis and was advised to take calcuim to avoid it.After 2 years I was able to adjust. For my skin dryness I just have to apply a l lotion and body oil and other symptoms sometimes on and off.So far I'm ok by now.hope this help a lot...

Thank you for your response Goodfaith. It certainly helps to know that your symptoms were manageable without the hrt. I hope mine will be the same.
I have a bone disorder which causes severe pain on a daily basis and I do not like the thought of adding more pain. If you do not mind my asking, was the back pain due to menopause or you injured your back? Thank again and I appreciate any and every bit of insight you can share.

hi! goodfaith here...even before I was diagnosed to have an ovarian tumor, I was really having back pain. My back was not injured or whatever but my doctor told me that it was a pressure since my tumor was too big that my back was affected and so a month after my operation that I really felt the pain that put me on a therapy for almost a month.Perhaps my back pain was a bit part of my menopause and a pressure due to huge cystic mass. Now my concern is osteoporosis which is really a menopause symptoms.

Hello,
Just offering up my encouragement and prayers for you're speedy recovery....... Try not to worry too much( I know you will anyway..) My surgery was 11 weeks ago and they left me one ovary which seems to be either failing , or I'm starting menopause now anyway... I'm having severe burning in my face that comes and go and my doc said it might be meno starting.. I'm having my blood hormone levels tested now.... If I am going into meno I think that I would rather handle things naturally without HRT if possible die to the cancer risks involved... It scares the crap out of me and I would rather go through it the way my mother and grandmother did without chemical help.... as long as the symptoms don't get out off hand or affect my quality of life... my mother etc never had any problems so here's keeping my fingers crossed that I wont either..! lol Hope that's a little help for you, and let us know how you do ok.?\ Take care, Sharon

Sharon,
How did you know that I would worry ANYHOW?(lol) Truth be told, I am not too worried about the recovery portion. I just do not want to be blindsided by symptoms so I wanted to know what other people have experienced. My mom had a hysto over 25 years ago and only had some hot flashes. I am hoping that I do not even have that, but if I have to have anything, I hope it is limited to JUST one thing. Personally I think I have been peri for at least a year. Based on my reading, I have seen increase in crying, depression, anger and I started having some burning-neuropathy type symptoms in my arms and legs which a neurologist examined me intently to figure out its' cause. It was not neurological. Now I am beginning to wonder if it is menopause. Periods are still very regular but hellishly painful. I will keep you up to date after surgery. My surgeon anticipates a 3 day stay so I maybe home by next Saturday. I don't know how the sitting up to use the pc will work BUT just as soon as I can, I will post.

Goodfaith,
Thank you for the additional insight. I am glad to know that the back pain was NOT yet another symptom of menopause. I have enjoyed being pregnant and being a woman, but after all that we endure, why do we have to then be tormented by such a thing as menopause? It sounds maddening. Oh well. I will update as soon as I can.

I think you are very wise. Ovaries left behind post hysterectomy crap out early and may stop working anyway, so, go ahead and make your plans. I am a big believer in HRT...not that I am getting anything helpful just yet..working on it...Went into "surgical menopause" and I feel just awful. It is abrupt and cruel compared to natural--I am learning about this after the fact. You are well educated about all this and I think that makes a big difference. Best to you.
PS I read somewhere about beginning HRT prior to surgery and then tapering off as your body would. Made sense to me.

Hi ladies,
Surgery was successful!!! Pathology report said NO malignancies were noted!!! Praise God!!! I am SO happy about that but having a fun time with the sheets. On, off, on, off they go, every night since Sunday. Surgery was last week Wednesday so I just made 9 days today and made it 4 days before the fun started. Thanks for the pre-op advice and encouragement. Now, if only I could remember what I did with my memory:-(
