OK, it's been 6 weeks since 9/2/09 when I had: full hysterectomy, bilateral oopherectomy and a large ovarian cyst removed. Was in the hospital on a morphine drip for several days. Left, then had to have others help me out a lot the first 2 weeks...then came home and have been, for the most part, taking care of myself. On a daily basis, I DO things to try to improve my condition. YET, according to my OBGYN Dr. I just saw today, for my 6-wk post-op visit, I"M STILL NOT 100%! She says it can take up to about 6 MONTHS, not weeks....for me to regain the physical strength in general that I did have before the surgery. WELL--what ELSE IS THERE that I can DO at home to IMPROVE my overall strength??? So far, I: walk outside 15- 20 minutes but then it hurts/burns and I have to lay back down awhile and get up again, I can do light chores around my apartment but it still hurts to vaccuum (I tried!), and I can drive to the store for up to about 10-15 minutes, walk around TOPS--at maybe one hour while taking my time...then I start hurting again and have to lay down again! AGH! Just---what ELSE can I DO?? By the way, I am not taking any pain medication at all for this...not even aspirins or other stuff. THANKS for any advice you can offer....even if there isn't anything, I will appreciate your support. thanks....."Fire".

I am n the exact same boat... I kinda feel like I was set up by my gyno. I am just 4 weeks in and have TERRIBLE insomnia. I am so tired. I have been taking 1/2 of an ambien but will only sleep 4 hours. I feel overwhelmed and cry alot. Don't feel like you are alone...you are not. It took me almost a year to mae thi deccision and I am stll not sure I made the right decision. I have heard a lot of horror stories.

Personally speaking: I am sure that was the LAST thing you wanted to hear your doctor say. I am sure, however, that your body has been telling you the same thing. Follow your body's cue. It knows best. I am 2 weeks post op for essentially the same surgery except with the addition of lysis of adhesions and a surprise hernia repair. I keep pushing myself and today my body decided to push back. I am in agony today more than previous days.
Professionally speaking: The trauma/assault that surgery does to your body CAN in fact take up to a year. The six to eight week time-frame given is essentially the length of time it takes for your incision to heal completely from the outside, in. Your body then has it's own readjustments to make: balancing hormones, finding a new home for your intestines and other internal structures that used to lie securely on & around your now absent uterus, etc and not to mention the reemergence of the new you. It's alot of hard work that is being done on the inside. Be patient with yourself and your body. Hang in there my friend.

I think you are pushing yourself and your body too hard.... I think if you walk to the point of burning, your doing way too much and it takes a few days to recover from the effect of the walking. Try to slow down and give yourself more time..... 6 weeks is not a long time for major surgery.... in my thoughts... take care

Yes! Vacuuming, they don't think, or forget to warn you about that chore. Really bad till you are healed, which sucked for me because vacuuming is a positive chore for me..becaue it provides instant positive results.
Everything you describe sounds very normal and familiar to me. I thought it would never end! Did turn the corner only recently (surg end of August) and that is not saying a whole lot. The interior pain is gone but I am still fatigued more than I think I should be...but it is not daily anymore. For a while I would have a positive day or two and then 3-4 can't do diddly squat days. Frustrating and very confusing in that I was not sure what to think about my recovery status. It is typical, so I just busted it all out on the days I felt like it and rode out the others in bed or on couch. What else can you do? It worked ok because now I am doing very vigorous chores and exercise without pain. Still way more tired than usual but think it is getting better. Feel like it is ok now to push myself..we'll see how it goes. My HRT adjustment made a difference I believe. You didn't mention your hormone therapy, is that going ok? PS Eat well, meat especially. I did not eat much meat because I didn't have a taste for it...think I made big strides after I ate more meat/protein. Figure out a way to get more in meals.
