My daughter was labeled as having mild Hypotonia when she was about 9 months old. The neurologist told us to take her to physical therapy and she should show improvement over time. We did not see improvement, and she actually lost her ability to do things like push up and roll over. After months of testing, we found that she had SMA (spinal muscular atrophy), a motor neuron disease that affects the voluntary muscles in the body that controls head and neck movement, and is used for crawling, walking, swallowing, and eating.
I know that this is a forum for Hypotonia and I think it is wonderful to hear so many positive stories about Hypotonic children that do improve physically. I thought it was important to note that Hypotonia is a condition, not a diagnosis, and it is a symptom of some disorder or disease.
My daughter happened to unfortunately be one of the few cases that was diagnosed with a genetic disease that is incurable. To read more about my daughter and SMA, please visit her website at www.maiashockley.com.
I really want to share her story with others because I think it is important to spread awareness for SMA.
Thank you.
